It's HDR, High Dynamic Range, from a shitty filter on a smartphone. See https://www.reddit.com/r/shittyHDR for more examples.

My point is, is this gonna be like, the popular thing to do now?

That photo is so epic that it needs to be reposted on this page:

It's more metul. :metal
But not too wanna-be metul like the BC&SL promo pics.

Why is JLB ginger?

Because he is naturally a redhead ?
Not to rain on your parade, but his hair here is light brown and it's the photo that's too red

I love how they are dressed normally!
I hope that the final photos would look as much natural as possible!

Ugh, none of them really look any different. It's just them wearing their regular clothes and standing there expressionless, just like every photo shoot, including BCASL. There was nothing remotely goth about any of their photo shoots, unless Photoshopping in a cloudy sky is goth.

SO METUHL. WHAT A HUGE DEPARTURE THEIR NEW PHOTOSHOOT IS!

Or maybe you also mean the SC photo shoot?

So glad they're over that phase of wearing clothes and standing there.

IMO the Sky and Clothes made it Goth :p

Even though Black Clouds & Silver Linings is one of my least favorite Dream Theater albums, I actually think all the promo shots for that one were awesome. Like that image there one the sofa is really cool, far better than any Dramatic Turn of Events photo.

The clothes were a little more metal, but I still wouldn't call that goth.
But anyway, my bitching aside, my point is that they've always done the regular photoshoots for images, even if there have been one or two a bit more towards the metal side, so I think you're making an unfair and inaccurate generalization of their past, especially based on seeing only one photo of them taking a photo (photoception!) for the new album.

I'd love if the new promo photos would actually show them smiling for a change. The expressionless photos of albums past are just so depressing.

This seems to be the case for most bands, for some reason.

This. Metal bands(' record companies) could take a hint from pop star promos - you don't have to look dreary to seem hardcore.

Personally, I don't smile in photos that often so I don't care whether the DT guys smile in the promo pics or not, but of course photos where they look happy could be a nice change.

Black Clouds still takes the cake for worst DT promotional photography EVER.

The guys just totally don't seem themselves in those pictures. ADTOE was much better, and I'm fine with this as well.

On a random note, during the 2011 live shows, during the Dream is Collapsing intro, did anyone notice that John Myung came out of the Korean Jungles?
