Whoa. You'll be surprised if you know that Awake is mostly considered one of the top 3 DT albums by most of the members here. Though I have to admit that those who rank Awake in the lower half have a) increased in number and b) gotten more vocal about it.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

There are more people who rank it top three than those who don't. I don't see any lack of Awake fans here.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

3. Images and Words
4. SDOIT

I can understand the people who don't rank it top three putting it way down, because it's one you really have to discover, (as I did only recently) and until then the 'more rock than metal' sounding riffs and vocals can be off putting..
but once you do discover it, you find it is their most unique and progressive album.. and doesn't belong anywhere other than top three

1. Scenes from a memory
Not just Dream Theater's best work - this album is the masterpiece of progressive metal genre. Brilliant from begining to the end, not a single bad moment. And also a hard album to pick a favorite song from...

2. Images and words
Although I dislike the cheesy ballads here (Another day and Surrounded), the rest of the album is wonderful. Metropolis and Pull me under were my immediate favorites, and stayed to this day.

3. Systematic chaos
Hugely underrated. I know why some fans dislike this album, but I guess that it grows on you after a while. I'm sure that time will show how great this album actually is.

4. Awake
Very dark and haunting. I don't know why don't they perform more songs from this album in recent years. Space-dye vest is my personal favorite. James LaBrie is at his best here.

5. Six degrees of inner turbulence
The title track is just fantastic. The first CD takes some time to get into it. Very diverse and interesting, with many different influences notable.

6. Train of thought
Dream Theater's true metal album. My least favorite on this release is ironicaly the most popular one, As I am. Some horrible nu metal and rap elements can be found, but the rest is amazing.

7. Octavarium
Deffinitely not the bad album, but I guess it's just not interesting enough. The title track is excellent, and so is Panic attack. The rest is just so-so. I used to like this album much more, though...

8. Falling into infinity
Could have been a much better album if it included Raise the knife and if A change of seasons was released on it, instead of being released as an EP. Some very unusual songs for DT here...

I still haven't heard WDADU, but I hope I will hear it as soon as possible.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence-Some genius songs and melodies on here.
Awake-Very dark, also my first DT album. Some epic moments here (Voices, Scarred)
Images and Words-Just brilliant.
Scenes from a Memory-Great concept album. Not always in the mood for it though, but still great.
Train of Thought-Good album showcasing DT's more metallic(a) tendencies.
Octavarium-Very proggy and lighter in places. Second half is much better than the first IMO.
Systematic Chaos-Some great songs, but some lazy songs too.
When Dream and Day Unite-A good debut, but awful production and rather cheesy.
Falling into Infinity-Some classic DT on here (New Millenuim, Trial of Tears, Lines in the Sand) but dragged down by some of the worst DT songs ever written (Anna Lee, You Not Me, Burning My Soul)

Note: The top 3 are pretty much tied for me.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I'll try:
1. Scenes From a Memory (actually my favorite album of all time).
2. Images and Words ("objectively" the best DT album, and a flawless masterpiece).
3. Train of Thought: So energy, powaah! I really love every song (yes, even TDS) except for As I am and Vacant.
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: The tittle track could put this album in my top three, but I don't care too much for the first disc.
5. When Dream and Day Unite: four great tracks and a completely different perspective of DT's music make this album very special to me.
6. Falling into Infinity: I definitely cannot listen this album from start to finish without skipping many tracks but the good songs are real gems.
7. Systematic Chaos: a solid effort, I think every song is enjoyable in a different way.
8. Octavarium: I'm actually surprised this album finished so low. Well, I don't listen to it that much to be honest, it doesn't drive me crazy maybe because of the lack of fireworks in many of the tracks.
9. Awake: two masterpieces (Voices and Lifting Shadows) and a couple of very good tracks (Erotomania, The Mirror) but I could perfectly  live without the rest of the album.

Really?  A solid effort is 2 places higher than an album with "two masterpieces and two very good tracks"?

I mean....Really?   :-\

Here we go.  It's hard to rank the DT discography because everything listed is such a quality release.

01.  Awake
02.  Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
03.  Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From A Memory
04.  Images And Words
05.  Black Clouds & Silver Linings
06.  Octavarium
07.  Train Of Thought
08.  Systematic Chaos
09.  Falling Into Infinity
10.  When Dream And Day Unite

I didn't include A Change Of Seasons on purpose because it's just an EP.  The song itself is one of the best things DT has done, though, hands down.  I like ranking the albums from time to time.  Sometimes the order surprises me.  :lol

based on what i've heard of Black Clauds and Silver Linings, i could see that in the top 4

i'm surprised Systematic Chaos is so low on so many peoples lists, i think its got some awesome songs and good all round

I feel the same way about FII and WDADU.   :lol

Personally, I think Systematic Chaos has some excellent songs, but I rank it last because it isn't nearly as consistent as their other albums, and it has several weak tracks.

2. Awake
3. Images & Words
4. Falling Into Infinity
5. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
6. Scenes From a Memory

8. Train of Thought
9. When Dream and Day Unite.
I keep having a vision of DT getting on a late night talk show like Conan or Letterman and playing Wither.  That would be 7 different kinds of fabulous.

The first three kinds being sex, nachos, and mud wrestling, right?
