Of course I agree. I tried so many times, and I think it will just not get through me... I think The Astonishing is the album that I gave the most amount of chances from all albums that I've heard in my life... and nothing happened... :(

The Gift of Music is a great song all the way through, I get goosebumps at the "My brother, Gabriel..." part. I hate it when the early release single ends up to be by far the best song on the album. Usually, it's among the weakest.

The Savior in the Square has that superb drum fill 3 minutes in, underlined by that beautiful vocal melody. A New Beginning is also pretty good, uplifting, but I get bored by the guitar solo at the end. That's about it, I don't like any of the rest.

Man, that guitar solo at the end of A New Beginning is one of the best solos ever. Seeing DT for the first time on the Astonishing tour, the crowd must've given JP a standing ovation 3 or 4 times throughout that solo, and I was in second row right in front of him. One of the best concert moments ever, you could see in JP's face how much fun he was having playing it for the crowd. When I first heard it (especially about 6:15 in, I think it is, when the really fast, catchy tapping part starts), it gave me goosebumps the same way In The Name of God's solo did when I first heard that.

Yeah, I know that it's revered by many, I've even heard people say that it's the best part of the album. It does nothing for me, just sounds like random noodling with no structure (same with the INOG solo by the way). I can imagine it working great in a live setting though. I prefer the more melodic solos, the one in Breaking All Illusions or Finally Free can make me tear up.

I'll drink to that... BAI's solo is WOW!!

Especially the Breaking the Fourth Wall version, where he puts in a little "Free Bird" at 8:40. Speechless. I have no speech. :hefdaddy

Where do we stand in the Distance Over Time era?

01. Awake
02. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
03. Images and Words
04. Octavarium
05. Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory
06. Train of Thought
07. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
08. Falling Into Infinity
09. Systematic Chaos
10. A Dramatic Turn of Events
11. When Dream and Day Unite
12. Distance Over Time
13. "Dream Theater"
14. The Astonishing

The top 3 or 4 are interchangeable depending on the day. Scenes has been slipping down my rankings over the years. Used to be my #1, then 2, and so on... Maybe it's the production. Lord knows I've listened to it a bazillion times.

I've done this a bunch in other threads, but ok.

Top Tier (this is the typical order within the tier, but it does vary)
SFAM
I&W
SDOIT (if TGD were even a little bit good, this would probably be my #1 DT album)

Not Quite Top Tier (Awake usually tops this tier, but there could be a lot of variance)
Awake (songs like Innocence Faced, The Mirror and Lie keep it out of the top tier)
TOT (could've been top tier if they'd left out HYF and TDS or made TDS much shorter)8
8VM (IWBY and Never Enough keep this out of the top tier, and I'm not all that fond of These Walls either)

Middle/Mangini Tier (these albums are very consistent, and I find it hard to rank them)
DT12 (probably has the most "great" songs among these three)
ADTOE (three truly great songs (BITS, Outcry and BAI, but the rest are fairly pedestrian or just "meh")
DOT (opens slowly; BW and S2N are my favorite, but nothing that I can really call "great")

Charlie Tier
WDADU (a couple great songs and nothing I don't like, but Charlie's vocals keep this from ranking higher)

Swing and Miss Tier (not really sure about the order of the top three albums in this tier)
BC&SL (Wither is great, TCOT is good but has parts that are big misses, TBOT is boring, and the rest is just meh)
FII (had none of what made I&W and Awake so special; 4-5 above average songs, a bunch of duds, and one of DT's all-time worst)
SC (IPOE was a big miss, and Repentance is the single worst song in DT's catalog; CM is the only song that I'd call better than good)

Good Idea but It Just Didn't Work Tier
The Astonishing (one or two good songs and an hour and a half of rather bland, mid-tempo cheese)
"There's a bass solo in a song called Metropolis where I do a bass solo."  John Myung

It’s their most atmospheric and groove-based album, which is more what I’m into. I love the diversity of sound and influences and the more “prog-rock” nature of the songs as opposed to their prog-metal side. Plus, LITS, TOT, HK, and NM are 4 of my favorite DT songs.

And it is one of the best sounding DT records. I wouldn't put it at number one but it's a really strong record.

I've tried liking FII. I really have, but I just can't. It feels too tame for my metal tastebuds.

It's second only to WDADU for worst album, in my opinion.

It being less metal doesn't bother me. It still is obviously very metal, of course, but some stuff is more hard rock, and ballads. I can take or leave a couple tracks but otherwise every song sounds pretty good to me. The sound they had there is very full-bodied, and Sherinian on keys gives the album a more unique feel. I used to overlook FII but it's a big grower.

Having gone through a DT binge the last couple of days, this is how I’m feeling right now. I kind of put them in tiers in my mind. Also it’s hard for me to separate a lot of them from the ones that came before and after. I’m the same way with Rush.

Excellent
Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Train of Thought
Octavarium

Still Pretty Excellent
Images and Words
Awake

Super Cool
The Astonishing
Distance Over Time
Dream Theater
A Dramatic Turn of Events

Really Great
Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Systematic Chaos

Very Very Good
Falling Into Infinity
When Dream and Day Unite
