Grahhh, so hard to rank (wasn't hard at all). These ranks aren't based on favorite but is based on how much I listen to the albums. I love all the albums equally and I find perfection in every song. I will be talking about these more as I wrote the reviews of the songs. Scenes is first because I just love the whole Victoria/Nicholas concept and my favorite would be the big three: Home, Finally Free, and Beyond this life. Rudess makes a strong entrance in this album. As I said I don't dislike any songs including regression. Each part is vital.
What can I say about Train of Thought? Love it. I'm more of a metal kind of girl and this filled my needs perfectly. While my friends listen to Justin Bieber, 1D, Jonad Brothers, or 5SOS, I listen to Dream Theater which has made me an outcast in music among other 13 year old girls, though the boys who listen to DT are fun to hang out with. My favorite would be This Dying Soul, As I Am, Endless sacrifice...ah screw it, I love everything, especially the Petrucci/Rudess duets.
Six degrees, yes! Every song sticks out to me. I can spend days and days just listening to 6DOIT without getting bored. Especially love Portnoy's first of the 12 suite, the Glass Prison. Enjoyed Goodnight Kiss as well as about to crash reprise. Just know I lover everything about the song.
A pretty big gap of quality from WDADU to I&W. I just love every song there to death and if I were to rank all the dream theater songs, I wouldn't be able to decide. Dream theater is just that great as they have helped me through trials and tribulations. Also love Labrie's F# on learning to live.
Awake contains 2. songs in my top 15. Can you guess what it is? I will tell you on the awake write up, but I love the drastic change in style. Also, Erotomania! Gah! Space Dye Vest also gets to me every dang time.
Who can hate on falling into infinity? Contains extremely great songs and it shows that even if they go mainstream, they can pull it off. Burning my soul irritates me in some parts, but overall, I love it. Who can compare against Trial of Tears?
Black clouds, the song with the 4 epics I love to death. The instruments are close to perfection. Also, the best of times. I can understand how hard it was for Portnoy. I lost someone close to me also...and this song had helped guide me. RIP Howard Portnoy.
Octavarium is a neat album. How each song is an octave higher just blows my mind. We're all trapped inside this Octavarium. It's namesake is one the greatest songs I've ever heard and in some parts, the trippiest. I also love the ballads so much as it speaks out in many different ways.
Systematic Chaos is not that bad also. It had the bad @$$ Dark eternal night as well as in the presence of enemies, and TMOLS. I can understand why some songs can be irritating, but overall I love this album. It's a fun album to listen to.
Their self titled album says a lot about them. I love Mangini's snare drum sound. My personal favorites are the illumination theory, the enemy inside, and behind the veil. Rmemeber, I still like all their songs. This stood out to me more than ADTOE.
ADTOE has been the least talked about with the dream theater guys I have been hanging around. I love on the backs of angels and that was an inspiration for my name. Lost not forgotten and bridges in the sky were strong for me also.
I only listened to one instrumental of WDADU. Ytse Jam was the Olympic so good I have ever listened to on that album and it was due to coincidence. I was looking at the best myung bass solos and this popped up so by accident, I checked it out and it failed to disappont. Love how all the band got a solo.
