Round 6 Results!!!!

Nekov: Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia – Guardian Angel (live)
Another Al DiMeola song! I must say that I liked Scorpion’s submission better than this one, mostly because that one featured a lot less guitar wankery and more structure. Here the guitar was way to wanky for my tastes. It just seemed too drawn out and really didn’t hold my attention. I know this was the only acoustic song you had in your library and had you had more, I know you would’ve sent me something better.
5/10

Ytse: Machine Head – The Darkness Within
This is a pretty cool acoustic rock piece. Nothing folky about this one, it’s just a rock song done acoustically. I liked the lyrics and the fan made video was really cool and fit the song. Anyway, I liked it but there isn’t much more to say than it was a cool piece. I did think the singer would be better suited to singing on a heavier song, but that’s kind of a minor gripe.
6/10
-2 for lateness
4/10

Elite: Magic Pie – Endless Ocean
Pretty good acoustic pop song by a prog metal band, but nothing special. Honestly, there is hardly anything to say about this one. There isn’t much to the song at all. The vocals sounded like something Styx would do and I really don’t like that much. This was really forgettable unfortunately. I did like it somewhat, but the vocals were definitely the low point. I liked the vocal melodies for most of the song though.
6.5/10

PuffyPat: The Mountain Goats – No Children
I just looked up this band on Wikipedia and found out they are based in my area and I think they’ve opened for my favorite local band (The Old Ceremony) a couple times, but I’ve never seen them. Anyway, this was a great song. A nice indie rock piece, it had a cool 6/8 feel and had a great vocal melody in the bridge and throughout the song. I really liked this one. Great submission.
8/10

Scorpion: Al DiMeola – Mediterranean Sundance
This song had some pretty sick Spanish style guitar riffing (or Mediterranean I guess lol) and it’s obvious this guy knows his guitar. He’s incredibly talented and in this song he’s all over the place. This song is really technical while still maintaining melody and structure, so it’s not so technical that it’s unlistenable. Really cool song, and a bit of different folky flavor, which I like a lot.
8/10

Crazyaga: Radiohead – Last Flowers
This was a good song. Radiohead is definitely better at making acoustic songs than some other bands sent to me this round. This piece seemed really sad (I couldn’t really hear the lyrics, so I don’t know for sure) and that added to the acoustic slow-song atmosphere. I would definitely listen to this song if I’m depressed or something. I liked it a lot.
8/10

Heretic: Nick Drake – From the Morning
Cool song, and some of the most beautiful lyrics ever. I liked this one because it was really relaxed, perfect for an acoustic song. And as I said, some of the most beautiful and moving lyrics I’ve ever heard. Cool guitar work on this one, and his voice was great.
8.5/10

Lolzeez: Neil Young – Heart of Gold
I’ve heard of Neil Young. Who hasn’t? This was good. Not entirely acoustic (I think I heard a little electric guitar in there), but it doesn’t matter. The highlight of this song was the harmonica, and damn, it was awesome. Added with the twangs of the not-so-acoustic guitar, it made the song really chill and fun to listen to. The vocals were also really good. I liked it a lot. Don't get discouraged, dude, I know that you can send some good stuff if you really think about it.
8.5/10

The standings.

Heretic: 53.5
Scorpion: 50.5
Nekov: 47.5
Elite: 47.5
PuffyPat 42.5
Crazyaga: 41
Lolzeez: 37
YtseBitsySpider: 33.5

Heads up: there are only two rounds left. Time to bring out the big guns, yes?
Just FYI for the last round: I will be running a wager point system for the last round (round 8). More to come on that at the end of next round, but basically, you can wager up to all of your points and I will rank songs 1-8. The top 4 will gain their wager and the bottom 4 will lose their wager. I'm telling you now in case you wanted to save something special for the last round. theseoafs came up with/used this system and I stole it from him. I should probably give him credit.

Anyway, the next round's (7) theme will be:

New To The Scene

Send me a song from a band that is rather new and has only one album (or two albums, if it comes to that)

Deadline: Friday @ 23:59 Eastern Time. Don't forget that there is a 2 point penalty for lateness. Let's get to it.
I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

Glad you liked the song. They're one of my favorite bands, and John Darnielle (the singer) is my favorite songwriter. He writes in a very poetic way, and the way he delivers the words really helps show how good of a writer he is.

EDIT: SENT. Cautiously optimistic for this round.

The lyrics of Last Flowers: (its about drug addiction)

Appliances have gone berserk
I cannot keep up
Treading on people's toes
Snot-nosed little punk

And I can't face the evening straight
You can't offer me escape
Houses move and houses speak
If you take me there you'll get relief
Relief, relief, relief...

And if I'm gonna talk
I just wanna talk
Please don't interrupt
Just sit back and listen

'cause I can't face the evening straight
You can't offer me escape
Houses move and houses speak
If you take me there you'll get relief
relief, relief, relief, relief, relief...

It's too much
Too bright
Too powerful

Too much
Too bright
Too powerful

Too much
Too bright
Too powerful

Too much
I love beautiful things.

ROUND 7 RESULTS!!

Lolzeez: Dean Watson – Past Present
This was some pretty chill Jazz fusion piece, but it was more electronic then most jazz fusion I’ve heard. I liked it ok, but it didn’t seem to be going anywhere. It just when on and on doing mostly the same stuff. It changed parts, but most of the parts weren’t more or less interesting than the last part. Also, as one youtube commenter said, “The percussion is positively amateurish.” This person is right. The drums bored me a lot. I guess because he programmed them. Anyway, this wasn’t a song that really managed to hold my attention all that much.
6.5/10

PuffyPat: Ambassadors – Falls
This song opened strong with a very cool riff and a driving beat. This is some great indie/alt rock right here. It was good while it lasted, but really, it’s not that memorable. I liked it though, the drums especially. They were driving and really fit the song. Cool stuff
7.5/10

Ytse: I Am Abomination – Since 1776
This song was good for what it was, which is pretty much the case fore all other modern metalcore songs. I liked it enough, but didn’t love it. It was as good as the other songs you’ve sent me. This one stands out, however, because of the cool ending orchestral part. I liked that part, and it is something I haven’t heard many of these metalcore bands do.
7.5/10

Nekov: Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks
The thing that really stood out in this song was the female/male interplay on the vocals. The Mumford & Sons influence is really obvious on this track, and that’s awesome, because Mumford & Sons have a really cool sound. I really liked this song. The horns were a really cool addition also. I will be checking out more from this band in the future.
8.5/10

Elite: Ørkenkjøtt – Skygger og Støv (Del II)
I had heard your first submission before, so I listened to this one. I liked it a lot. It sounded a lot like Tool, but Norwegian. Awesome. I have yet to hear one band that i do not like from Norway. This song was not my favorite, however, because I accidently listened to Skygger og Støv (Del I) first and liked it better than Del II, but Del II was still very good. I’ll definitely be checking this whole album out. Cool stuff.
8.5/10

Heretic: Amia Venera Landscape – A New Aurora
I got a real Anathema-ish vibe from the piano part at the beginning of this one (which, according to Spotify is the end of the track before it, Empire) but it quickly descended into a brutal hardcore/post-hardcore piece and then became a soft acoustic verse. The whole thing sounded kind of like Melodic hardcore with a little black metal thrown in. Awesome. A very well done piece of modern metal music. I think the band it most reminded me of was Ne Oblivscaris and I really love them, so this was a great piece. Totally going to check out this album when I get the chance.
9/10

Scorpion: Shattered Skies – Saviors
The first thing that stood out in this song is that the guitarist and bassist aren’t using picks except for the guitarist on his solo and at the very end of the song. They were in fact slapping. And it sounded totally awesome. I really liked this piece and I’d really like to see this band get some more popularity, because they are pretty incredible. My favorite part was the main riff/beat, which was incredibly zesty.
9/10

Crazyaga: *Shels – Butterflies On Luci’s Way
I never knew that music this beautiful and grandiose existed. Anathema comes close, but never as close as this to the pure beauty and expanse that post-rock and post-metal convey. If I had to describe this song, I’d say that it is pure beauty and amazingness turned into sound waves. I loved, loved, LOVED this song and there is no doubt it will listen to more of this band. Honestly, I would give you an 11 if that were possible. The vocals were my favorite part of this song, but everything else was amazing too.
10/10
The Standings:

Heretic: 61.5
Scorpion: 59.5
Nekov: 55.5
Elite: 55.5
Crazyaga: 51
PuffyPat 49.5
Lolzeez: 43.5
YtseBitsySpider: 41

This was probably one of my favorite rounds, guys! Awesome job. Are you ready for the last one?

Round 8
With a deadline on Wednesday @ 23:59, this gives you a full 3 days to submit your song.
When you send your song, tell me how many points you'd like to wager. You can wager up to all of your points.
I will rank songs in places 8 to 1. The top four (1,2,3,4) will win their wager, thereby gaining the number of points they wagered. The bottom four (5,6,7,8) will lose their wager, thereby losing the number of points they wagered.

As for the round theme, this will be an OPEN ROUND.
