And the fact you have ranked Watershed criminally low, although I guess you explained that earlier.

The other thing is that while Axenrot has more chops, I prefer the feel of Lopez.  That's probably a quite significant part of it.

I recently came around to The Baying of the Hounds. Probably one of my favorite Opeth songs now. I never disliked it or anything, but I think the beginning of the song is maybe the weakest part, so I was tuning out early. That outro though... :hefdaddy

you should check the freak folk album by Comus. a few Opeth songs directly use that bands lyrics as song titles and other lyrics - and Baying of the Hounds is one of them

the album is Comus - First Utterance

Has anyone caught a show with the new drummer?

I saw them with the interim drummer in late 2021 I think. Not sure if it was the drummer's fault at all, but the band's energy was so low and the tempos were slowed down so much that it was just not a fun time for me, so I'm not even sure if I want to go to a show this tour. Plus I don't need to see them play Deliverance for the ten billionth time.

Aw, no North Carolina show.  Bummer.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Are they going to release an album? Also interesting that they're playing the Mission in Denver on their own. Last time they played here they did the same room with Mastodon (and it felt like the crowd was mostly there for Mastodon). Hopefully that bodes well for a smaller crowd, more intimate show. Pumped!

They headlined Mission prior to that by themselves in 2020.

I assume a new album has to be imminent. Usually they release around September so the timing is right. They only play a few new songs on tour though so it doesn’t make that much of a difference.

The Milwaukee show announcement mentioned that it is a "seated" show.  Take that as you will.

I'll be there! I love that it is GA!  I am hyped, I haven't seen Opeth live - just getting into them. My son loves them and hes tall and buff. My bodygard!

Is Opeth connected to this music somehow? Sorry for the ignorant question (maybe)

If it wasn't Opeth connected I wouldn't have posted it in this thread
FYI Opeth bass player Martín Méndez 'side project'.

Oooh OK, thanks for the clarification. As far as Opeth is concerned, I only really keep up with Mikael. The other members rotate in/out too much and/or don't make enough of an impact on Opeth's music for me to notice or track

Actually Opeth have had a pretty steady line up for quite a few years now.
Martín Méndez - since 1997
Fredrik - 2007
Joakim - 2011

I've never really gotten this opinion. He's a good drummer for sure, but to me he's kinda just there. Definitely not flashy and his grooves feel pretty standard to me.

I'm in the same boat as emtee, Lopez has some of my favorite playing on the Opeth albums. I've watched Lamentations so many times, he's an absolute joy to watch. He's got a certain type of rhythm when he's playing. I also love the way his drums sound on all his albums.

This not a diss on Axe as he's absolutely amazing as well, but I have a huge soft spot for Lopez.

I know the general consensus around Opeth seems to be that Mikael did 90% of the heavy lifting since Orchid and the other guys were there to make his vision come true (kinda like the musicians who have played with Devin Townsend) but I do feel like Lopez and Lindgren leaving definitely sucked something out of the band for me at least. And I don't mind the replacements at all but I guess sometimes members are missed for other reasons than their ability on the instrument.

Lindgren played very tasteful solos while Fredrik, imo, mostly shreds.
