My bet is it flew off from a wreck that just happened and it was bad place, bad time...er...well lucky for those two but probably not so lucky for the driver of wherever that tire came from it that was in fact that situation. Or it was the ending to this movie, which I still haven't seen but will surely check out now.

Tires can just come off while you're driving sometimes. It'll carry on at the same speed it was traveling when it went free and if there's any sort of downward incline it'll go for a long, long while; angular momentum and gravity will see to that. In this case that was the whole wheel (as opposed to just the tire) and it appears to have come off a large tuck. Driver of the truck might not have even noticed. if he didn't see it roll past him. I've heard of people hitting them while they're rolling the same direction, presumably trying to be a good citizen and stop it, and the tire will flip the car straight up on the air; shit-ton of torque combined with well designed traction equals baseball pitching machine.

It happens more often than you'd think. A lady was killed by a runaway truck tire (dump truck) just about 30 minutes from where I live a month or so ago. Shoddy maintenance practices by truck drivers. There was a period about 10 years ago it was a big problem, and a huge crackdown and change in some laws - holding the truck drivers personally accountable to the condition of the trucks they drive.

A couple years ago on one of the many Chicago expressways, the brakes on a truck overheated and basically exploded, sending pieces of metal flying. One piece hit a car and killed the driver. Just a month or so later, a tire came off a truck and some cars ended up in the ditch trying to dodge it. No injuries, but coming so soon after the other incident, for a while, there was a feeling like "whoa, trucks are really dangerous" but we got over it.
