The Great Debate has an atmosphere unlike any other Dream Theater song.
That's because it has an atmosphere like a Tool song.

Chop chop, people, is it Muse or Tool wrecking the enjoyment of a song?

So which bands can Dream Theater reference and be inspired and which bands are they not able to reference?

Pink Floyd, ok?
Rush, ok?
Metallica, depends?
Pantera, okish?
Tool, bad?
Muse, OMFG end of the world?
DT, lazy slobs who have run out of ideas?

Help me out here.   :p

Absolutely.

When Six Degrees came out, I had never heard Muse. But I heard Tool, and I was hearing it on track four for sure.

That song?  Tool.

Muse is one or two others.

Yeah Tool's always been for The Great Debate and the bass in Home. Muse has always been Never Enough and parts of Panic Attack. But different people can hear and interpret different things.

Don't forget Prophets of War! And glad to see someone else that thinks Panic Attack sounds like Muse; I've always thought so but never heard someone say the same.

I thought so too, mainly just the vocals.

Well this and Panic Attack and Prophets of War just aren't 'good'. The Great Debate however is a top 10 track, so I don't give a damn if they sound like Tool (which I've always found a weird comparison by the way).

Well, that's completely fair.  If you don't like a song, you don't like a song.  I'm sure there are songs that don't sound like Muse that you dislike, too.

EDIT: Oh, right, this is a top ten thread.

1. Take the Time
2. A Change of Seasons
3. Metropolis
4. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu
5. Learning to Live
6. In The Name of God
7. Bridges in the Sky
8. Caught in a Web
9. Under a Glass Moon
10. Misunderstood

You're right. Panic Attack isn't good, it's "great"!. Aside from 2 seconds of falsetto, I don't really hear Muse in there either.
Never Enough and Prophets of War though, well, I won't defend those.......

Isn't there an ex-DTF poster that went by the name of 6:00 as well (no slight against you btw, you would have no way of knowing, just curious)?

Anyway, welcome to the forums.

Haven't listened to very many Dream Theater songs in a while. A few have popped up on shuffle, but I've kinda been on a power-metal kick of late. But that's neither here nor there.

Anyhoo, Top Ten-ning away!:

1. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
2. Breaking All Illusions
3. Fatal Tragedy
4. The Spirit Carries On
5. Blind Faith
6. 6:00
7. Bridges In The Sky
8. The Count Of Tuscany

I don't like it when people classify Six Degrees as a single song... Yes, it's a suite, but the movements are all way too unique to me to be counted as one song. And in all honesty, if you listen to it from beginning to end, not all of the transitions are very smooth. I think it has too many ups and downs within itself to be judged as a whole.

Few would guess it's a song if not told.  It's just that Portnoy called it a song so that's how people label it.  It's an argument that gets nowhere yet keeps coming back.
