Has anyone else noticed that 'this is the life' is very similar to 'wither' structure wise?

Yeah, TITL seems like the sequel to Wither in a musical sense.

BUT THE SONGS ON ADTOE ARE ALL SIMILAR TO IMAGES AND WORDS ALREADY HOW CAN THAT BE

Seriously though, it is there, but it's nothing really surprising. I mean, it's not as though it's a very uncommon song structure that the two songs employ.

Pretty common for a band to have several songs similar in structure over the course of their material, especially albums which stand side by side.

Don't really hear it all. Especially considering one is in 4/4, while the other is in 6/8.

The only exception I might hear is the bridge at 3:42, where I believe Jordan uses the same choir patch that he used in Wither, or at least a very similar sounding one.

I find that This Is The Life builds a lot more. It reminded me quite a bit of Peruvian Skies in structure, but yeah, in terms of mood, it's similar to Wither.

More like welcome to modern music in general. It's a very common structure, so it's hardly worth even mentioning.

Maybe it's the time signature, or just the way it builds, but This Is The Life has always felt way more progressive than Wither, to me.

I wouldn't say it's a lot more progressive, although it definitely has a few extra touches that make it a bit more unique, such as the keyboard lead before the second verse, plus the built up guitar harmonies at the end, and a few time sig changes, while Wither is pretty straight up 4/4 that I recall. It's still not a very progressive song though relatively speaking.

Besides that they're both ballady by DT standards, the two songs have nothing in common whatsoever.

And Adami has struck once again... :) I'll take TITL over Wither anytime, but that's just me.
To the OP : no offense, but every once in a while, there will always be somebody coming up with a "OMG! X and Y are almost  the same songs...blah, blah, blah...". Honestly, don't try so hard.

This. I can hear the Another Day similarity in TITL, but the Wither comprarison is pretty far-fetched.

It's still not a very progressive song though relatively speaking.

I also think it has to do with the arrangement. It's not just quiet verses, loud choruses, it gives us a powerful intro, but then quiets down again, and after that, it gradually builds and builds back into the loud and powerful.

The main difference between Whither and This is The Life, is that Whither is a good song.

That's right. And This Is The Life is a great song!  ;D

But don't you see? They're ripping off themselves ripping off other bands inspired by Dream Theater ripping off Europe, and thus the vicious inspiration cycle continues........

I don't see any similarity at all.

And, TITL > Wither  but very close because Wither is one of the reason that makes BC&SL listen-worthy at some point.

I don't care what the band says, but the lyrics of This is the Life are about Portnoy leaving the band.

DT's biggest fan ^

Personally I don't find much similarity. Wither has a more radio friendly time signature (4/4 vs 6/8) and a very straightforward structure. The lyrical themes are different and TITL is quite a bit heavier (with multiple leads +solo as opposed to just a standard solo). I can see how you would think they're similar, they serve a similar purpose on their respective albums.

Yep! Two Dream Theater songs are similar. Nothing new, you could probably say much the same of Bridges in the Sky and Outcry, but the broken chords, the clean guitar, the basic structure - it's an uncanny vibe.

They go quite nicely back to back. This is the Life first, seeing as there's that faint spot of The Shattered Fortress at the end of Wither.
