I have the book, and it is split that way. But I don't really agree with the book, because it splits sections by where the vocals start. I think it is safe to say that Medicate starts at 8:45, but the book doesn't name it until the vocals come in.
I'd definitely consider the synth solo the start of Full Circle, although I'm not sure what the consensus is on that here.
Same here, I thought it was pretty obvious, guess it isn't.

I always thought the first instance of Full Circle's main riff after the synth solo was where it started. I'm torn between it and Razor's Edge.

I haven't listened to Octavarium in almost a year, I've got it on my stereo right now. Godamn it's giving me a nostalgia trip   :hat

The (octatonic scale) instrumental section of Full Circle!  :hefdaddy

Been a long time since I listened to it but from memory, the intro is decent (if a little derivative) and Someone Like Me is quite a nice section.  After that, I'm usually pretty bored until Razor's Edge with the epic Petrucci ending which is amazing.  Not a favourite for me at all but the epic ending is one of their best.

The whole song is perfect, but the way Intervals builds in intensity is just so good.

The instrumental at the end of Full Circle is awesome, but The Razor's Edge gets my vote.  What a perfect ending to a damn near perfect song.

I can't be the only one who doesn't memorise the names of the individual sections of epics.

er... I like Jordan's extended Moog solo...

Normally I don't, but in 8VM, the sections tend to have a very clear start/stop to each, which makes it a little easier.

Personally, I don't really like any of the sections by themselves, but really love the song as a whole. It's weird. As I'm trying to think of which section I like more, I find myself not loving any of them outside of the whole song.

It's odd for a song that's Twenty Four minutes long but it's perfect I think.

1. Intervals (perfect climax, probably DT's best)
2. Someone Like Him (I can remember when I first heard this part, I was mesmerized)Ļ
3. "intro"
4. Full Circle

5. Medicate (Awakening) - nice bassline, but ultimately gets a bit boring until Jordan's solo kicks in

6. Razor's Edge (the only part of the song I don't really like)

It's hard to choose, Intervals is just an intense segment. Literally had me on the Edge of my seat. I love it. The Razor's Edge, however, is an auditive orgasm.

Whichever part is where they do a verse recapping each song on Octavarium, and ends with the "Trapped inside..."

Full Circle, without any doubt..

I won't ever get the hate or dislike the section causes in a good portion of the fanbase.. I used to skip the song to listen that glorious and flawless part.. :heart

The intro, the verses of Someone Like Him and JP's final solo are also beyond excellence..

Razor's Edge...definitely.
Jordan's synth solo is also one of his best in DT, and I also really enjoy the album version of the intro. The score version, aside from when the full band comes in, is alright but not as good as the studio intro IMO.

The best part of Octavarium is the second just before it begins. Then everything goes downhill. Of course, when it ends everything is fine again, more or less - after all, you listened to it, unfortunately - but at least itīs over.

I don't like you.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Ah, the classic Nicky Lemons song. I prefer Octavarium though
Jordan took Moore's boring, pedestrian parts and elevated them considerably to take them from barely palatable to stellar.

I can't choose a single moment, but I think that the highlights are:

- Someone Like Him: The flute that plays early on. Just gorgeous.
- Medicate: The first time the bass line hits. So groovy.
- Full Circle: The crazy instrumental stuff. It's both catchy and chaotic.
- Razor's Edge: Outro solo. One of Petrucci's best!

I love the whole thing, to be honest - but that wasn't a poll option. ;)
I chose Medicate (Awakening), just for Myung's tasty bass and Jordan's understated/gorgeous piano.
Same here

This song is like a trip, emotions and vibes are changing a lot through it and it's quality is stunning.
I love something at every moment of the song, and like a lot the singing, thought I usually care less about it :)

Whether intentional or not, The intro is a lot like Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
