Favourite part of Octavarium (song)
« on: September 01, 2012, 11:54:24 AM »
I love Octavarium so very much, and I want to know which part everyone else likes the most. I think the song kind of goes downhill after Medicate, but the orchestral breakdown and Razor's Edge pick it back up. I really love the intro, Someone Like Him is gorgeous, Razor's Edge is tempting... But I'm going with medicate. The melody very nice and pretty, but the real reason I'm voting for it is because Jordan's solo really stands out to me as one of the best DT moments of all time. I smile every time I hear it.

I've always been under the impression that the synth solo before the first verse in Full Circle as well as the instrumental section afterward were both part of the Full Circle movement proper.  Is that correct?

If so, I think I'll be going with Full Circle, but it's one hell of a hard decision, as each part is overwhelmingly strong.

Ok, this isn't going to be the most original answer, but I just can't look past Razor's Edge.
The whole song is beautiful, with the intro and Intervals being slightly below the rest (but still great), but to me it all feels like it's ultimately building up to that epic outro.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The Moog solo, obviously, and what comes after it. I don't like the way it's divided, but the whole song is amazing anyway.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

I love every part of the song it's so hard to choose, even the intro gives me chills. I'd say it's between Full Circle and Intervals, I think I'll go with Intervals. I love everything about that section, JLB's vocals are just amazing. I also love the fact that you can hear the rest of the album within those intervals. The entire song builds up to this moment and it's just amazing when it finally reaches "Trapped inside this Octavarium." One of the greatest things I've heard in music.

Full Circle starts after the synth solo. And I agree, each part has it's own sort of identity. Octavarium is a masterpiece <3

NOTE: If you're voting for a section for Jordan's solo, make sure it's the right one! Medicate has the solo in it.

On its own, Medicate is amazing. But through the whole song, the climax at Intervals is the best.

Someone Like Him... makes me think of my dad
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

The sections are divided (according to Wikipedia) into specific time groupings. Medicate is from 8:48 - 13:49, which encompasses the solo, which is in the 12 minute area.

I love the whole thing, to be honest - but that wasn't a poll option. ;)

I chose Medicate (Awakening), just for Myung's tasty bass and Jordan's understated/gorgeous piano.

Wow, no one brought attention to JP's solo concluding the song past (or during?) Razor's Edge? Incredible.

Second place to Intervals.

When Octavarium came out, my favorite parts were Medicate and Intervals for years. Over the last couple of years, I've gained a new-found appreciation for this DT epic, and have re-realized Razors Edge is one of the most beautiful sections of music the band has ever conceived, so that's where my vote went.

I could be wrong, but I recall someone mentioning that the official tab book splits it that way, because I remember it being different to what I'd thought.
Personally I wouldn't trust wikipedia for shit when it comes to DT though. So much of it is sourceless fan speculation.

Hard to pick a favorite, none of the parts in the song are anything special to me. I think it has to be Medicate, I like JM's bass riff.

I have the book, and it is split that way. But I don't really agree with the book, because it splits sections by where the vocals start. I think it is safe to say that Medicate starts at 8:45, but the book doesn't name it until the vocals come in.

I wouldn't even consider there could be any ambiguity there. The music changes to a new section when that bassline comes in at 8:45, and the vocals come in as a continuation of that section. I don't agree with the book on that either. I wish they'd put timestamps in the album booklet to clear that up.
Pretty much every section of the song has a clear point where it changes, and it's not when the vocals kick in. I'd definitely consider the synth solo the start of Full Circle, although I'm not sure what the consensus is on that here.
