DAT SOLO (you know the one)
« on: August 23, 2012, 09:47:06 AM »
Whenever I listen to Live at Budokan, I have to replay this solo about 30 times. Holy mother of JP. It's got to be in my top 3 Dream Theater moments ever.

...you'd better know which solo I'm talking about.

I actually don't know which one you mean, since he has a couple.

It has to be either the Hollow Years or the ITNOG outro solo though. Both amazing variations on the songs.

It's overrated and better on the album.
There, I said it.

But JP makes those ten seconds count!
I do prefer the live version, but I can't discount the beautiful tasteful melodic simplicity of the original too.  :tup

I am quite surprised at how many people think the LaB Hollow years solo and itNoG solo at the end if good. I always thought they were mediocre at best, but I will say the live hollow years climaxes great when JP raises his arm in the air.

and I don't know if this means anything, but this is coming from a guitarist of 15+ years now who has high regard for JP's playing, his combination of technique, note choice, melody and phrasing amongst many other things he does well

They were at least, good.  Not sure what you mean by mediocre unless you're referring to the fact that the band was extremely jet lagged that night.  Still, it was much better than mediocre, IMO.

I wouldn't call either of them mediocre, but neither of them are all that, IMO.  If I had to list my 25 favorite JP solos, neither would have a prayer of making it.

DAT SOLO, the one in question, is stunning. It also holds a special place in my heart because it was the first piece of DT music I'd ever heard.

ITNOG is also very good L@B, I think.

I always loved the Hollow Years solo, but to be honest, the ITNOG solo didn't do much for me, it was good but certainly not top tier JP.  I prefer the studio version.

The Hollow Years solo on LAB is amazing.

People who dislike it always complain about the fact that there's shredding and how it doesn't belong in a song like that, but I say that's bullcrap. First of all, there's been a number of DT songs where people complained about how JR interpreted the keyboard parts and say, "It's not just about what he plays, but how he plays it."
And that statement applies to JP as well. Yes, there might be some shredding on the Hollow Years solo, but when he plays that solo, that shredding sounds like the guitar is weeping. It's not, "Badass angry metal" shredding, it's powerful, emotional shredding, which completely fits into a song like Hollow Years.

Word.

But no love at all for the shredding in the Beyond This Life jam?

I've often wondered how I would feel about the solo if I'd gone into it with realistic expectations.  But because of this forum, the first time I heard the solo I was expecting the experience to make me find religion or something, and I ended up pretty disappointed.
Sincerely,
Jaffa
