Blast Beats
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:51:48 AM »
What are blast beats? and why are some critics spotting it as something negative about BC&SL?
Any examples where on the album exactly are they?

What I heard there is double bass drumming..
But this sure isn't the first time I heard that in a DT song.

I think the blast beat is characterised by the snare and ride pattern that goes atop of the double bass pattern you're hearing.  The snare and ride are being played on every 8th note (if that makes sense).

Blast beats are beyond overrated. I've seen musicians who won't take musicians unless they do blastbeats, and other people who only think a drummer is good if he does tons of blast beats. (I say "he" because obviously girls can't do it)

I think they are fine if done correctly, but I dunno if ANTR is the right place for them. They seemed forced in there. It didn't detract or anything, just seemed unnecessary.

I agree with Adami, they sound overrated.
Wasn't there a blast beats section at the end of Finally Free on LSFNY?

Blast beats themselves are great, but the one in ANTR is not utilised well, I think MP just really wanted to use one SOMEWHERE.  It doesn't suit the riff its under IMO.

Used properly, they can be pretty dang br00talz.

I guess the worst example for using this formula was on Metallica's St. Anger, espeically with the snare sound sucking and all heh

Aside from the Ernie and Bert video (which I had seen before), I've only ever heard blast beats in A Nightmare to Remember. While I think it's entirely possible that they could work in a quick death metal song, Portnoy's sound out of place. The snare overwhelms the main Continuum melody and distracts from the mood of the section.

No, I agree also.  I like it.  Perfectly appropriate for that section of the song and, as such, enhances the music.

And as posted in another thread:

Not sure I understand the sudden criticism of blast beats in a DT song.  Blast beats were pioneered by jazz drummers, and are now commonly used in metal.  Given that DT is a progressive metal band that blend a number of styles, primarily jazz and metal, why on earth would they NOT incorporate blast beats into their music at some point in time?  Besides, a lot of Mike's fills in the past have practically been blast beats.

O_O how did I not know this / hear it? I would go get some jazz music to play but the Count won't let me get out of his car until I finish listening to the album.

While I wouldn't generally cite wikipedia as authoritative, it is good for this sort of general information.  From the article on blast beats:

Quote
The English band Napalm Death coined the term "blast beat",[2] though this style of drumming had previously been practiced by others. Daniel Ekeroth argues that the blast beat was first performed by the Swedish D-beat group Asocial on their 1982 demo.[4] D.R.I. ("No Sense"),[1] Sepultura ("Antichrist"),[5] S.O.D. ("Milk"),[6] Sarcófago ("Satanas"),[7] and Repulsion[3] also included the technique prior to Napalm Death's emergence. Blast beats originated in performances by jazz drummers of the 1960s and 70s such as Tony Williams, Angelo Spampinato, and Sunny Murray, in particular his 3/28/1965 Greenwich Village recording of "Holy Ghost" with Albert Ayler. Allmusic contributor Thom Jurek credits Williams as the "true inventor of the blastbeat"[8] in 1979.

I like them when done right and not overused. Don't really like the one in ANTR, though. But that probably has to do a lot with the synths over it.

I would have liked them in ANTR if they were more "in time".  It seems as if he is struggling to keep up with the tempo, and falls behind just slightly.

I highly doubt that he's out of time; he's probably just playing it in some unique/unusual manner. No professional band would ever release a professional studio recording with a part that was out of sync with the rest.

My ears aren't lying to me, and that section is not in perfect time.  It's not horrible, but it is definitely not perfect.

Uuuuhhm... A lot of newer DT albums have drum parts that are not perfect/sloppy. The blast beat is not bad, but is slightly behind the beat. Not a big deal, he's not Blakek Richardson or anything! :)

Well you all seem to have no problem telling everyone how off time the blast beat apparently is, so you shouldn't have any problem finding it.

But if you must know, it's at about 5:35. The syncopated ride cymbal is ahead of the beat slightly.

I'll check it out, but for the record, I was one of the ones supporting the idea that it was in time.
