I was saying earlier to some friends, while GWB might have been an idiot, I never had the impression that he had a genuine disdain for half of the country.

The more things like this come out, the less enthusiastic people will be to vote for him. And in the American political system, turnout is everything, and less enthusiasm means less turnout. Come election day, I don't see Romney firing up the base, I see many people not voting, and that'll probably mean Obama wins re-election.

Just a couple adverts on YouTube encouraging young people to vote. Looks like Obama knows where his allies are.

Now this, I think, is worth discussing:

http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/17/look-how-far-weve-come-apart/

Granted I've heard the late '50s and early '60s were more polarized in actual government than these graphs let on, but it's telling nevertheless.

While I'm not so sure, a lot of people seem to think this incident will have an extremely negative effect on Romney's campaign. http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/3qz6gr/

Wow, has Romney stepped into it.

Yep.  Saw it a few days ago and wasn't quite convinced it was real, but now there's no doubt that the caricature of Romney people like to paint is actually incredibly true.  Its scary that this man is running for president as the representative of a major party.  Jeez.

Not only the fact that he's running, but the fact that he has so many supporters.

I know it's hard to fathom, but this 47% fiasco won't change much in terms of voting blocs.  Because to some extent, Romney is right.  There DOES exist a certain percentage of the voting public that will not vote for him regardless.....all that other junk he said about "because they feel like victims, they feel entitled, etc, etc, etc" is nothing but right-wing dog whistling in front of a right wing audience, but the numbers he cited are actually pretty much right on the money.

There's a very, very small, but statistically significant portion of the voting public who truly are independent and -especially in the so-called "battleground states"- those are the people he needs to win over.  I don't think you win them over with this kind of rhetoric, though.

The numbers he stated we no where near correct.  Please show me where the numbers he stated were "right on the money".

And as much as "the silent majority" is political rhetoric, I'm sure there are more moderates than that.

So Romney made an appearance on Univision (a Spanish television network). See if you notice anything... odd... about this picture. It has not been in any way modified or color corrected;

Shit, its real.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt he got caught in the sun and this is not a political stunt.  That would be the lowest low I have seen in a very long time...

edit...not a stunt.  It was done to him just before the show.

Wow...

This whole presidential campaign should be made in a TV comedy series. It's getting out of hand  :lol

Yeah, but seriously... artificial tan to appear closer to the hispanic voters? Romney must have zero faith in his own rethorics and ability to convincingly convey a political message if he felt he had to do something like that to increase his chances with the Latino community.

If someone weren't just looking for reasons to sling mud, why would you even assume that is the reason for his tan?

To be fair, there are multiple alternative explanations that don't involve a terrible attempt at appealing to hispanic voters.

I mean, if that actually was the case, then it's fucking absurd and definitely not just "oho some people will make a big deal out of anything" material, but I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt on it. His actual policies and stated beliefs alone are enough to make the guy completely unfit to be president.

Oh right on, so you think he just decided to get an awful fake and bake shortly before he was scheduled to go on that show?  That's cool.  I don't think I'd want a cat with that poor of judgment running our country though.

Well, Ockham's Razor, I believe...

But indeed, it could have been a casual incident or something done purposedly. We can only make assumptions unless something else is revealed on this matter in the future. Nonetheless in politics assumptions are very often more crucial than facts.

Umm...Ockham's Razor is not just a convenient excuse to leap to whatever conclusion most strongly supports a preconceived notion.  :lol

I mean, this is the front page photo of Romney of The Huffington Post:

He just has a shitty fake tan thing going anyways, it's not much of a stretch to think the makeup guy at Univision or the lighting or whatever just accentuated that.

Forgive me, but I live in a country where the general mindset towards politician is expressed with a famous quote by a famous politician: "To think maliciously is a sin, but still a sin that will expose the truth".

On the other hand, I must admit that being on the (far for US standards) left side of the spectrum, polarization issues affect me as well. I am happy to hear accounts of Romney's gaffes, that can't be denied. But that's once again due to me believing his ideas are not the ones that should light the political path of a de facto global world leader the POTUS is.
