Portnoy & Akerfeldt. Do You Want It?
« on: July 25, 2012, 03:50:28 PM »
If these 2 musicians, who seem to be very good friends, get together to form a project, who would you want in it?

Assuming it was a prog-rock/metal fusion type project of some kind, I'd love Derek Sherinian to be involved. Not sure who I'd want on bass.

I'm assuming Portnoy would be in charge of all vocals... right?

It's hard for me seeing a project like this happen, but I would check out anything with Åkerfeldt in it.

I don't think Akerfeldt and Portnoy are really in the same place at all, musically-speaking, anymore. I'm sure Portnoy would jump at the opportunity, but I doubt Akerfeldt would have any interest.

Not really - I'd rather have another Storm Corrosion or other Akerfeldt/Wilson collab to be completely honest.

I get the impression that they are good friends, not musical friends. MP seems to hate experimenting and being in studio for too long. Akerfeldt would pay attention to the music too much for MP.

I just remember reading an interview with Mikael about going to see a DT show in like 2002 or something and he said something along the lines of "Yea....DT were cool I guess, but the opening band Pain of Salvation, they really impressed me"

I think, much like someone else  here-Rumborak over in another thread?-that Portnoy had a tendency to overstate the potential for a musical collaboration with Akerfeldt. After Heritage, I honestly don't know what sort of project they'd work on well anyway.

That would be definitely cool.

As to the Akerfeldt/Portnoy project, I don't know. Maybe this could be improved by adding other cool musicians and writing the songs together as a band (like in Flying Colors). If you only have Akerfeldt and Portnoy, I would imagine that Akerfeldt writes the songs and Portnoy helps arranging them and I wouldn't expect too much of it.

If it happened, I'd see how it turns out, but yeah, I do very much think that another Akerfeldt/Wilson album would be more the thing I'd be looking for. That said, if it was a full band thing with the whole band writing, that could be cool.

Who gives a fuck?

What sucks now is that to be a fan of MP, we have to follow him from project to project. Some hit, some miss.

EDIT: Sorry, Darkshade, I didn't mean to be disrespectful towards you. You ask a perfectly legit question. We can all dream about MP working with ____________. MY frustration is that watching MP perform with DT has always been my favorite part of being a DT fan. Now we're relegated to side project after side project with nothing really to latch onto.

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I agree with this. I feel like Mike should take 1 year off to clear of his mind and start practicing again to improve and then come back and start doing stuff.

I bet MP would want the project to be metal and Mikael wouldn't so I don't think it's very probable, although they are good friends. I also think a project featuring Steven Wilson and Portnoy is even less likely; I remember reading that Steven was asked to sing on the OSI debut when the project was still basic prog metal in vein of The Thing That Never Was but he declined the offer as he wasn't into that style. However, he agreed to sing Shutdown after KevMo had joined and taken the project into a direction MP was not very comfortable with. Actually, I think a project by Steven and Kevin could be mindblowingly awesome! :omg:

Wellll ... that's I'm pretty sure what Adrenaline Mob was supposed to be. I don't think it's all PR when he says AM is his main band right now. It's just that not many people care for the music he's into these days. And it's of course not good news if a side project of his completely overshadows his main project.

I'm at this point pretty indifferent about it. MP is a drummer, not a songwriter. So, he has reasonably little influence on the songwriting aspect of the music he plays in, which is ultimately what I care about.
If he started a prog metal outfit it would all depend on who's writing the songs. AM wasn't so uninteresting because MP lost his mojo or something; it's because the songs were mostly written by Orlando. And Flying Colors was successful because Morse+Morse wrote good songs.
