Well, some among us would call that "good intuition".  A lot of others would call that "very bad intuition".  I guess that's all I can really say on the topic. :lol

Not sure. I have really no particular reaction to the concept of god. I do however have occasionally an aversion against the people pushing for Him. There's that sense of manipulation I can't stand.

This is really for any atheist, not just theseoafs: What is the most annoying/difficult thing about dialogue with a person of faith?  Do any of you enjoy talking to religious folk, or would you rather just avoid it?

Most of my friends are christians, I have no problem talking to them. My issues with certain people of faith are the same issues with anybody.....when they try to sell something that I have no interest in buying, and won't stop trying to sell it, then I get annoyed. If they're not selling me anything, I see no problem.

There's no reason to overgeneralize by saying that "all persons of faith do X, and it bugs me", because many of the religious people I know are perfectly pleasant.

I dislike close-mindedness and stubbornness in a person.  I also dislike being solicited for goods, be they material or spiritual.  However, these problems are not exclusive to the religious community.

For the most part I avoid breaching the subject. Frankly because most Christians know so little about their own religion that it becomes very awkward when an obvious agnostic lays down a lot of uncomfortable facts about it.

I'm not religious at all. I don't like the concept of gods and devils and all that supernatural jazz. Does this make me an atheist or just non-religious, or does non-religious mean the same thing as atheist?

If you don't believe in any gods, you're an atheist.

What if you admit the possibility just deny the probability?

Well, isn't it obvious? What would follow is that Alvin Plantinga would force his way into your living room and convince you of God's existence with his famous Modal Ontological Argument  :mehlin

All joking aside, though, what possible good reasons could you give to say that the probability of a maximally great being existing is low yet at the same time concede the possibility of the existence of such a being? That's what Plantinga's Ontological Argument seeks to establish; if there is even the possibility for a maximally great being existing, then a maximally great being must by necessity exists in every possible world (note that I'm not defending the argument, I'm merely summarizing it).

Wholly apart from that question, what reasons do you hold to come to the conclusion that God's existence is improbable? Worded in a more simple manner: what makes you see God's existence as improbable?

I guess I'll leave this to a group vote:

I was thinking about writing a little bit about morality.  Given that that will probably cause the thread to disintegrate into nothingness and be sent to Tumbolia, where all the dead threads reside, and that everybody here is probably sick and tired of the morality argument, I quickly doubted myself.

So, a show of hands, who actually wants me to try to address the morality question in this thread?  Unless a substantial amount of people are still confused about how atheists can act morally, I figure we can drop that issue and move onto atheism's more interesting bits.

Of course we can discuss morality. I haven't seen any forum rules that prohibit the discussion of morality, so there is no good reason to prohibit its discussion. The only impediment to discussing morality on this forum appears to be a rather high level of vitriol towards the topic coupled with a rather overall deliberately insincere and immature handling of the topic.

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to.  Morality, confusingly, is the one issue that practically nobody seems to be able to discuss calmly.  I'm offering up the group vote so I don't have to step into that no-man's land unless a substantial number of people actually want me to.

I dunno, feel free to discuss atheists' moral code to your heart's content. I'm certainly not going to partake in it, because that horse has been beaten to death, arose after 3 days and got clobbered again by an angry mob.
Atheists have a steady, reliable moral code that is logically sound and justifiable. Billions around the world live by it, so anybody questioning the viability of it argues against massive evidence to the contrary.

Well we can discuss it, together, as two men. While holding hands and without shirts on.  :heart

Omega, you've been warned repeatedly about this kind of conduct.  You raise some good points.  But the way you argue and conduct yourself is not welcome, and you have been advised of that on several occasions.  In addition to that, your willful attack on a mod for doing his job is unacceptable.  You are no longer welcome on this forum.

How could it be possible, but not probable?

Easy. Say something has a 30% chance of happening. That make it possible, but not probable. Can go all he way up to 49.9999999999% before something becomes probable.
