Microbadges?
« on: July 11, 2012, 12:40:11 PM »
Another forum I go to a lot has microbadges that people can earn or buy.  I was wondering if that is something we could do here - less buying and more for things like people who win fantasy leagues, participate in DTF activities like The Hat Bosk lost, Secret Santa, the "Ask DTF member" thread, attending a meetup at a DT concert, and probably a few other ones like member of the year or other titles we can have on a yearly basis.

I like it, though I haven't been on a forum that has them. What would they look like?

Certainly an interesting idea. Not sure if I like it or not since even the nuances of how the post count is calculated can devolve into a pissing match, but it would be cool.

Make one of the badges for having an underscore in your username and I'm in.

Semms like a good idea, though the requirements to get one should be a bit steeper than just being in an ask thread.

If this is handled in a good way it could be fun. We could start by giving Mason a badge for "Go and fucking finish your top 50"
Ahhh, the sounds of a thousand hearts breaking, delicious.

Yeah, like he's the only one who's ever stalled!  At least he had the decency to be honest about it, and step aside.  Yours is moving along nicely though.

BTW, welcome back Doc.  And good idea.  Although, I can see us degrading it to a Engvall like comment ... "here's your badge".
I'm actually disappointed he's not Kim Jong-Il

No...these have to be earned.  I think it would be a better guage than post count, and it would also keep history available.  The only way you can "ask" for a microbadge is if you actually earned it, so it's not like getting your own emoticon.  We could have a few "band badges" that would be free and limited to one freebie per person per year so people who can't do things like Secret Santa, get to concert meetups, or are just new can still have a little flair.  Not like my 37 pieces of flair though.

I don't need no stinkin' badges.

Ok, I lied.  I like it.

Certainly an interesting idea and in principle I wouldn't be opposed to it, but practically it would likely be extremely hard to implement given the current forum software. Most implementations I've seen have it integrated into the forum software at some level, but smf as far as I am aware doesn't have it as standard.

What a shame... if it can't be done.

It is a cool idea.

Sounds like a plan, though I too wonder what they would look like. Also who is going to judge whether someone deserves a 'badge' and while applying this idea, do you take the forum history into account as well?

They're small, and they look like the event they are associated with.  Secret Santa could have an elf one year, santa the next, a present the year after that, etc.

I've said it before, there is no "judge" who hands out microbadges.  You participate in an event like Secret Santa or if we do something like the hat again, you get a badge.  X-year member, you get the X-year badge.  Win member of the year, you get that badge.  There could be a handful of "band" badges that would be free that a user could select showing they really like a particular band/artist or album, but limited to one free badge per year.

I really don't want to discuss this further unless there is a decent chance of it happening.  No use talking about "what if" scenarios of something that won't happen anyway.

That would be freaking sweet ^
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
