I much prefer old, hippy-ass prog over prog-metal.  I mean, I like the stuff, but I don't care much for the power-metal oriented ones.  If I want to hear prog, I'll blare some Yes's Magical Underwear live album, maybe a video of Peter Gabriel prancing around in a toga.  If I'm craving power metal, I'll blast that one Kamelot album with the hot chick, maybe one of the older ones like Halloween or some Tolkien-based crap.  If I want both, I'll blast Symphony X (they're cool), but I can't exactly put my money behind most of the others in that field.  They be not my thing.

Regarding the genre in general, I do like more subdued stuff, like PT, Russian circles, and Ancestors.  Speaking of PT, their best stuff is from when they were psychedelic or alt-rock.  The metal stuff's still cool in my book, but they're at their best when subdued and under the influence.

I do not understand the love for Arcade Fire. At all.

Great songwriting, interesting instrumentation, among other things. My favorite thing about them is the fact that the songs themselves are really simple chord-wise, to the point where pretty much anyone can play them, but all of the different instruments that they have going really makes the songs wonderful. Plus Win Butler is really good at writing the lyrics so that all the songs really fit together. There are constant themes lyrically as well as musically which makes a 65 minute album (The Suburbs) seem like one great, big, wonderful song. And that is why I love the Arcade Fire.

For a guy who is such a hard ass for how things sound, most Steven Wilson productions don't really strike me as being audiophile worthy.

They're overrated as all fuck, but Arcade Fire are one of the few Indie Rock bands that can make an entire albums worth of songs that don't put me to sleep.

Also, The Suburbs is their best album.

For a guy who is such a hard ass for how things sound, most Steven Wilson productions don't really strike me as being audiophile worthy.
Heritage and GFD both strike me as being the two most boring SW production jobs ever, but maybe a big part of the problem is that the music is just balls.

Arcade Fire is the best band around right now.

Did I miss the news article explaining that Rush retired?
Controversial Rush Statement:

Clockwork Angels really isn't all that.  It's probably the best modern Rush album (ie T4E -> CA), but that isn't saying much and it doesn't compare to the classics.  It's also the first studio release where it's really apparent that Geddy can't sing all that well anymore.

You don't sing in your late 50's like you did in your youth.  People need to get over it.

I've got nothing against Arcade Fire.  I've got Funeral lying around on my computer, but I've not really bothered listening past the first four songs.  That's more me having a short attention span than anything else; the songs I've heard are good.  I remember back when I did a roulette, someone sent in a tune off of Neon Bible, and thinking about it, I could see myself really digging its 80s U2/Springsteen type vibe.

That said, I prefer Vampire Weekend.

I think Geddy's vocals are really good on CA despite him being a bit old.

I laugh a bit when I read things like that.  I see all the Geddy is yodeling and it's just silly.  His voice over the last 16 years isn't that different at all.  He sounds the same live and in the studio as he did since T4E.

I agree with you about Decon, Gadough :O

Neon Bible is Arcade Fire's best album.

Peter Gabriel's solo stuff is better than any old-school prog band (including PG Genesis) excluding Rush.

Rush's fans need to stop idolizing the 70s output of the band and realize that the synth era is really fucking good.

Gojira is really fun for a few songs, but on FMTS (the only album I have so far) the songs seem to run together after a while.

H-era Marillion is way better than Fish-era and would not be around after the early 90s had they stuck with their proto-Genesis sound.

Most new prog bands (read: most Inside Out bands) need to stop emulating Genesis/Yes/ELP.  It sounds dated and cheesy, and the keyboards are the worst part.  At some point they have to notice the most popular and beloved ones don't do that stuff and blaze their own trail.

The same thing goes for new prog metal bands and Dream Theater/Queensryche.

Early Fates Warning is unlistenable for me.

Ki by the DTP is one of the coolest albums I've ever heard.  There's nothing out there quite like it.  Its also one of the heaviest albums I've ever heard.  I could rant about it for 5 pages, but I won't.

The White Album is pretty meh overall.

Concept albums include "thematic albums," rock operas, and albums with a narrative, and people shouldn't be so anal about terminology.

A concept album, however, is NOT an album with one long song and then a bunch of unrelated songs.  Every critical mention of 2112 ever, you are on notice.
