Entire Images and Words Album on Jammit
« on: July 10, 2012, 08:20:31 PM »
http://jammit.com/artist/dream-theater

I know there was a thread for Panic Attack, These Walls, and Pull Me Under before. Those tracks are obviously there because of Rock Band/Guitar Hero, but now all of Images and Words is being released!

I find this pretty cool but sadly overpriced. I really want those stems.

Yeah, it's cool.

But fuck that, I'm not spending that much for a stem.

Is it $4.99 per song or album? And what is a stem?

What are these tracks and what is this program?  Sorry for the dumb question.

EDIT:  Just looked at the site.  So you can take whatever instrument out of the track, very cool.  But very pricey.

Consider that you aren't just buying a stem for $2-$5, you're buying the stem, the ability to remove that stem and hear the rest of the band playing, the entire notation and tab which plays in real time with the stem or full song. This is a stem + accurate song book. I'd say it's a fair price.

That said, DT should release all their stems from IW for their 20th anniversary ;) for free, but that's just my dream.

I didn't know that, with tabs included, that's not bad, I might look into some of these.

Has anyone used these.  Can you use them on your computer and mix your own playing through something like Cool Edit.

Look through their website (here's the FAQ http://jammit.com/faq), I think they answer some of those questions. It looks like they have apps for iOS, Mac, and a beta for Windows (weird, but okay) and you can mix your own playing into the tracks, though I'm not sure exactly how it works with Windows. I guess this was originally only an iOS app, and they're just now porting it over to the desktop.

What I think I might do (since I don't play any instrument that well) is buy the vocal stem and use that to listen to the rest of the band so I can listen to instrumental versions of the songs =P

Son of a bitch... The application won't work for me. (I have Windows). I mean, I know it's in Beta, but it won't open at all. "Jammit has stopped working" Close or find a solution then close. Sigh... Well, gonna wait for an upgrade, I guess.

Well at $5 per song except Another Day and most likely Wait For Sleep, which will both be $3 I'm guessing, that's $36 for the whole album.

It depends whether you actually get the audio files. If all you get is the capability to use it in the program that doesn't even have a full Windows release yet, that really stinks. But I guess that'd be okay if you got all the stems in some lossless format.

I have the same question too... do you get the audio files, preferably something lossless like FLAC or SHN? If so, the $36+ would be worth it to have an instrumental version of the whole album (sans vocals).

Also, I'm assuming these are all the original mixes, nothing's been remixed or remastered, right?

Sounds tempting...

-Marc.

Also, the entire album isn't out yet. They only have Another Day and Learning to Live. They are supposedly releasing a track every week.

as far as i can tell, they are locked in the Jammit program. if we're being honest, i don't see why they would use lossless - interactivity is often via OGG-related formats now. (however, lossless might begin to explain the price...)

either way, one assumes you could let it play through the stem and record your soundcard.

Good point, and Audacity does a good job of recording streaming/playing audio through the soundcard. It is pricey, though. I wish the official DT site would take these tracks and offer the stems as high-quality audio files rather than through this program.

PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING: For clarification before anyone purchases, it is NOT $4.99 to get the whole Learning to Live song. It is $4.99 to get an individual stem (either the vocals, guitar, bass, drums, or keyboard). For example, to own every stem for Learning to Live, it would cost $24.95.

However, when you get a stem, you can adjust both the stem's volume and the rest of the song (so you do, in a sense, get the whole song, but not the ability to adjust any individual track other than the one you bought).

So in total, it's almost $200? Yikes.

Well, Wait For Sleep is just vocals and piano, so subtract $15 from that. :)

well the service is designed so a guitar player can specifically 'jam' with the rest of the band. not for mixing and doing what you want with a stem track

You do, however, get complete tablature for whatever instrument you purchase.

For what it's worth, every stem is separate too. You can't buy, for example, every stem of Another Day, and adjust them all on the same screen. Every stem must be loaded separately.

Looks like it.  I think this is purposeful; the service is for learning songs and playing along to them, not for making personal mixes of your favorite DT songs.

So it's worse then. Like dangling the stems in front of our faces, but not giving them to us. :(

Not to imply that we're entitled or anything. I just really want them.

i wish there were something legal we could do about having these stems available. for instance, we could set up a pool of people to buy every stem, so the $200 is spread across however many people — but then nobody could legally share the Jammit packages with anyone else.

i'm almost willing to take the plunge and grab, say, the vocal from LTL, and report my findings (i have a few tricks to try!). however, i can't justify buying a lot of these (or even a whole song), and i wouldn't exactly feel great about sharing it illegally if i manage to grab it.

any other ideas besides pleading with DT to make the Jammit buyers angry by releasing them as downloadable FLACs? :P

I don't know who you are Jammit. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for me to buy your program, I can tell you I don't have much money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired from using the internet for a very long time. Skills that make me a nightmare for companies like you. If you release these stems as FLAC, that'll be the end of it. I will not download them, I will not get the for free. But if you don't, I will look for the torrents, I will find the torrents, and I will upload to YouTube.
