Songs for Special Occasions
« on: July 10, 2012, 08:39:41 AM »
I've become the go-to person when my friends need some songs for special occasions... it's very flattering but also a very challenging task as well...  you know you want to make people happy.. especially when they have some high expectations from you....
I'm pretty sure it happens to you too... as DTFers have some awesome taste in music...
Now today.. the subject matter is a wedding.. my friend is asking for a 'first-dance' song....  ballads and the like are not my strong suit.. yeah.. some of you know that already...
so I thought maybe you guys could give me a hand... also we could use this thread whenever someone needs 'that special song'...

so gimme some gems guys.....

I'll also go through my library tonight and post some canidate songs... so you can also come and yell at me... 'this is not a first dance song.. this is some heavy shit lady!

Any specifics as to a genre, preferably one that doesn't end in -core.

Shouldn't a first dance be something personal?  Odd that someone is asking for help for their first song.  Mrs.Jingle knew what she wanted for years.
I'm actually disappointed he's not Kim Jong-Il

well actually the bride picked a song too .. but it is one which calls for some serious dancing.. I know weird... but tastes...  the groom, my friend, on the other hand had broken his leg some time ago.. and not fully recovered yet... so they both agreed to ask me...

but actually, people ask this kind of questions quite a lot if I'm honest...

what was your song then?

I need to somehow devise a prog-playlist for sex (this would be quite a feat.) Any recommendations are welcome (aside from the moaning samples from DT's Home.)

A prog playlist for sex? Now that is a challenge, I'll just stick to good old Al Green.

Closest to a prog playlist I've ever come is playing Roger Waters' Amused to Death during a particularly fun night with an ex a few years back.  :lol

Good first dance songs, you say?  Let's see:

- One of my favorites is "Can't Fight This Feelin'" by REO Speedwagon.  It's generally well-known and well-liked, and it's a very good song to boot.

- The Beach Boys are also a good band: see God Only Knows (probably one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time) and Wouldn't it Be Nice (more upbeat).

- Perhaps some Bee Gees? How Deep is Your Love?

- Here's an obvious one: Journey.  See Faithfully, Open Arms.

I'll look around for more later, but I'll throw those out for now.

I once became intimate with a girl while the entirety of Porcupine Tree's Deadwing album played in the background. Pink Floyd would definitely be suitable for the playlist as well.

I'm actually dead serious - I got the idea for it from a dude at MP.com who used it as the introduction song for him and his wife at his wedding and he said it went over like gangbusters.

Well, looking through my iTunes library, these immediately stick out:

Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing At All
Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is
Journey - After All These Years
Peter Frampton - Baby I Love Your Way
The Police - people generally enjoy hearing Every Breath You Take at weddings, but the subject matter is decidedly creepy, so it's up to you. :lol
Stevie Wonder - My Cherie Amour

This should get you started.
