What are you listening to now? v. Dream Theater
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:40:06 PM »
Just curious about what people find themselves listening to recently.  Feel free to answer all of these, some of them, or your own questions that are somewhat related.

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

If you have only been a fan a few years, you may know precisely which one you've listened to the most from LastFM stats, iTunes, or whatever.  But for the rest of us, just give your best estimate.

Given that I've been a fan since I&W, and that I always come back to that one and listen, I think it's probably a given that that is my most listened to overall.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

For me, it is easily ADTOE.  I've listened to that album nonstop since it came out, and it became my most listened to album according to my iTunes stats within about 6 months after release.  My #2 would probably be SC.  I've been listening to that one a lot in the past year.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

Today, I had the urge to listen to BCSL.  After that, I wanted SC.  I think I'll just keep working backwards and do Octavarium and TOT next.

1. I've only been a fan for two years, but I've probably listened to Images and Words the most.

2. And funnily enough, I recently got back into listening to this album a lot, so really I&W and ADTOE is what I've been listening to the most these past few months.

3. Most recently I listened to Six Degrees. Man, every song on that album is top tier.

1. According to itunes, the song I've listened the most is SDOIT, and as for songs... "Breaking all illusions" and "Losing Time/Grand Finale".

2. During the last year I've listening ADTOE a lot, songs: "Only a matter of time"  and "Lost not forgotten"

3. Right now... "Forsaken" I have to learn it.

Not sure which album I've listened to the most since becoming a fan, although I'd say probably SDOIT, since it was the first one I got, and has always been my favourite since. That answer also applies to the last year or so, as it's about the only one I can remember listening to wholly in recent memory.

1. For listening to an album whole from start to finish in one sitting, probably Scenes from a Memory.  But the album that has spent the most time in my CD player overall is Images and Words.

2.  ... Still Images and Words, probably.  Possibly ADTOE or Six Degrees, but probably I&W.

3. Well, I listened to songs from Falling Into Infinity while exercising this morning, but I haven't actually listened to a full DT album just yet today.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?
Probably all of them equally, except Octavarium, SC, and BC&SL are a little less frequently, and ADTOE and WDADU very infrequently. Not that ADTOE is bad, just that I got out of my obsessive DT phase before the album came out.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?
I haven't really listened by album, but just to my favorite songs which are scattered across DT's discography.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?
If I decide to listen to DT album-wise, which is infrequent lately, probably SFAM.

3. Right now... "Forsaken" I have to learn it.

Oh, cool.  I take it you are in a band and are incorporating it into your set?  What instrument do you play?  (looks like a bass in your avatar if that's you, but I don't want to assume)  My band is incorporating I Walk Beside You, so I need to go back and relearn that one.  We do classic rock, but it's a cool song that a lot of my bandmates like, so we decided to work it up.

You should do Another Day. Or Take The Time. Or The Dark Eternal Night. Would love to see you do vocals for those.

1) Probably SFAM, but ADTOE is close ever since it came out.

2) ADTOE easily. It's my favourite DT album.

3) Haven't listened to one today, but I think I'll take bosk's idea and do a reverse discography. So up next is ADTOE. :D (fun fact: I never have the urge to listen to FII or WDADU unless doing a discog. the only other times I listened to them was after I got them, I broke them in after 2-3 spins to recognize the songs)

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?
It's definitely between SDOIT and SFAM. If I had to guess, it would be SDOIT, which also happens to be their best album (imho, of course).

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?
Definitely ADTOE. Its not even close. New album (especially one that is good) will usually take the cake.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?
I&W was spun the other day in honor of its 20 year anniversary, but I've also been jamming ADTOE and 8VM in the past few weeks.

I have a feeling it has to be Images & Words. It's my favourite Dream Theater album, and I've spun it many many times over the years.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Hard to say, I think it could be A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Six Degrees has gotten a lot of spins too recently.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

At the moment I'm listening to Scenes From A Memory, my 2nd favourite DT album. Haven't listened to it that much lately. And I also celebrated the 20th anniversary of Images the other day by giving it a full listen as well.

Another Day:  Nope.  Can't do.

Take The Time:  I can do those vocals, but it's too long a song and too un-traditional in terms of structure and other "weirdness" that your general classic rock crowd wouldn't get into.

TDEN:  It would be fun, but, again, wouldn't really fit what we do.

2) Probably I&W, Awake or WDADU
3) I&W era is what I'm massively into at the moment.

Yeah, for some reason I've always thought he was a bass player with classical guitar skills.  :eek

My contribution:

1. Probably Images And Words, or Scenes
2. ADTOE, it's just been released, so...
3. IAW for sure. I'm in the middle of a full-IAW love period! :)

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?
Definitely Scenes From a Memory.  I can nearly "play" it in my head front to back from memory.  Followed very closely by Train of Thought.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?
A Dramatic Turn of Events for sure.  It usually is my driving to work music (Hour drive).  I'm also neck deep in memorizing the guitar part for On the Backs of Angels.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?
No album in particular, but I've been listening to Lines in the Sand and This Dying Soul a lot.

1. SFAM, without a doubt. The first year it was out, I played it at least once a day for that year, and it still got played fairly frequently over the past decade, and is my go to CD when I am in the mood for some DT.

2. ADTOE, because (1) it's the newest and (2) it's really, really good. While it didn't approach the love I had for SFAM in terms of constant playing, it lasted longer than any of their CDs since then.

3. Right now, I've actually been listening to Clockwork Angels by Rush, I Am Anonymous by Headspace, Nine by Circus Maximus, and Eremita by Ihsahn so much that I haven't gotten around to any DT lately. Based on the past year, though, I imagine it'll be either ADTOE or SFAM the next time I feel like playing some DT.

1. SFAM. That's album that get me in to DT in stayed one of my favorites ever. Great to listen from begining to the end because of good concept story :)
2. I am listening to ADTOE since it came out and I really like it.
3. It's 20th anniversary of IaW so...IaW ;)

1. Images and Words. I play at least one song out of it on every day that I get to listen to music extensively.

2. A Dramatic Turn of Events, mostly because I played some of the catchier song in my opinion hundreds of times, and other cool songs in the album dozens of times.

3. I listened to IAW today for it's 20th anniversary :P

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

Probably Awake.  I&W is a close second.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Easy: A Dramatic Turn of Events.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

No specific album is dominating right now, but lately, it's been mostly all 90s stuff.

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

I'm gonna say Images and Words. While I do consider Scenes From A Memory and Systematic Chaos to be among their best albums, it's gotten to the point where I make sure to ration those albums and listen to them sparingly just to make sure I don't get tired of them. Yet somehow, Images and Words, I've been listening to very consistently.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Probably A Dramatic Turn of Events. Not just because it's new, but because it's the one album I have in my car. It's on a burnt CD, since I got my digital copy a day early, I burned it to a CD so I could listen to it in the car. When it comes to actual albums, I don't keep them in the car, to avoid wear and tear and stuff like that. So when in doubt, I just throw ADTOE into the CD deck.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

Right now, I'm taking a break from LISTENING to DT. I'm going to experience their entire video history, starting with "I Can Remember When" documentary, followed by I&W Live in Tokyo, 5 years in a Livetime, etc. etc. etc. in chronological order.  Should be an interesting experience.

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

Definitely Images and Words. It doesn't get old and after all these years I'm still hearing new things. Its perfection in my eyes.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Probably ADTOE since its exactly what I wanted from them. Next would be Images and words.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

Still thoroughly enjoying ADTOE

1. If I had my old PC I would be able to tell through itunes, but off the top of my head I think it's a tie between 8VM and I&W. I listen to those a LOT and when Octavarium was the only album I had (it was my first) I listened to it very very often. Awake might beat those two out though, it is definitely my favorite album.

2. Can't say really since I listened to WDADU, Falling into Infinity, and A Dramatic Turn of Events for the first time this year. I'd say it's a tie between FiF and ADToE, but I think I listened to ADToE a bit more.

3. Right now it's a mix of WDADU, ADToE and Awake though I'm going to take a break from DT aside from the occasional song or two, but when I come back to it I'm going to listen to both ACOS and SFAM for the first time ever :D

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

Hard to say. Something out of I&W, Awake, and SFAM. I have probably listened to all of them roughly the same amount of times, although Awake may be in the lead by a small margin.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Awake. One of the albums that I can play in its entirety and enjoy every song, so I usually start listening to 6:00 and continue with the rest of the album. Not too sure why it's this album that I have been listening to the most, perhaps it is my favourite.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

I had never listened to WDADU a few weeks ago so I've been giving that a spin, although I listen to Reunite rather than the original. I have also been listening to SDOIT a fair bit

1)  Either Awake or 6DOIT.  Those two albums got almost daily play for at least a year or two after I got them.  So Awake edges out 6DOIT by virtue of age.

2)  ADTOE by far and it is on it's way to joining the two mentioned above as highly played.

3)  While I was listening to a lot of symphonic, goth, and folk metal before ADTOE came out, I have been on a serious DT binge since the album was released and find myself listening to some mix of DT daily (with ADTOE being the most played album).

1 - I'm a huge fan for about ten years or so. The most listened album is Awake closed with I&W. I think I love classical side of DT.

2- ADTOE and FII, I can say. I find myself listening FII and FII demos lately.

3- I&W again, to celebrate the anniversary. Not only original album release. With many live performances and demos. They are all gem.

1.  What Dream Theater album do you think you've listened to the most since becoming a fan?

Honestly, I've listened to I&W, Awake, SFAM and Six Degrees all about equally.

2.  What DT album do you think you've listened to the most in the last year or so?

Definitely ADTOE and Six Degrees. I&W is always listened to pretty consistently, though.

3.  What albums are you listening to right now?

At the moment I'm listening to A Change of Seasons, right at 14:50 currently. Greatest thing they've ever done. Six Degrees, ADTOE, I&W, and Octavarium have been played a lot in the last few months.
