DT celebrates Images And Words Live
« on: July 09, 2012, 04:54:31 AM »
Because it was the 20th anniversary of Images and Words on 7th July, they performed Pull Me Under and Another Day in the encore.
Here a video of Another Day. James can still nail the notes most of the time!

Well, it's on par with his performance in the 15th anniversary, and better than most of the other performances post his rupture. That's not something you can take for granted when the man's almost 50 :P

Wow, great performance! JLB was hitting most of the notes really well, and was just singing with a lot of style throughout. Much better than his LSFNY performance, so let's hope this makes it onto the upcoming DVD!

Yeah, that would be awesome!  ;D

Also found the performance of Pull Me Under. James is really on fire in that one and the whole band has a lot of fun!  :o

Hell yeah! Austin gets the cake baby.
I was right there upfront. Amazing night, so happy to attend some sort of a special DT concert and it felt so unique and dedicated to the fans who know the significance of something like that.

I managed to get a decent video of Another Day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnNh-3ZR3Ok
You can see my humongous figure at the center front clapping at 0:17 then holding my head from excitement about the nice surprise :lol

The thread for this show at the Concerts & Setlist section has some nice details.

Am I hearing a different recording? James sounds pretty off on any of the high notes.

Also shocking, Mangini blew off all of the hi hat stuff.

One of the first held notes was pretty flat, and the last section was a flub, but man. That high verse was amazing. I didn't think he'd do it was well as that.

Edit: I'm talking about the "They took pictures...surrender to the secret." Awesome performance of that.

There were definitely some notes there that JLB just couldn't hit. If they perform AD again, I hope he adjusts those verses to keep it within his attainable range... still high, just not in the stratosphere.

But overall on the night, James sounded really, really good IMO.

I think that moving Another Day a few steps up in the setlist would do wonders ;) Let us not forget that a challanging song like Another Day becomes even more challanging when performed after almost 2h of singing.

A very good point that too many bands often overlook.

James is much closer than he used to be in that higher range, but he's still pretty pitchy and sounds very strained. John's tone is really nice here though.

One thing that I think people tend to forget is that James was in his late TWENTIES when I&W was recorded. The man is pushing 50 now, and I think that it's amazing how much power and control he has when singing some of these older tunes at his age (and after his rupture).

After Pull Me Under James said "Can you believe it's been 20 years?!" then stood sideways, gesturing at his profile and said "I still look the same, right?"  ;D

Wow that's a tough song to sing that late in the setlist.

And he didn't hold back on any of the songs on the set list either, I mean the man sang his heart out.

But I don't think it's fair to judge him from Another Day.  Even when he was in his 20's, he couldn't sing it.  It's just too hard a song.  In S.F., after a day's rest and with a more standard set that didn't have such nonsense in it, he sounded phenominal.

What I'm saying is without considering his overall performance as a singer, when Another Day is taken in isolation, he's gotten better but still sounds off. That's not a statement of his overall performance at all, though, as AD is pretty crazy.

I'm perfectly content with him not hitting all of the notes or performing it 100% the way it was on I&W as long as they dont start pulling some shit like tuning the songs down 3 steps to accommodate him like Ozzy has to do.  Performance was pretty badass.

Yeah, it was one of the sadder parts of watching Ronnie James Dio performing Holy Diver or Heaven and Hell in his later years.
