Dream Theater material that still NEEDS a DVD release
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:51:47 PM »
Aside from the songs on Black Clouds and ADTOE which obviously haven't been on DVDs yet, what songs from the DT discography are you thinking really need a solid DVD release?

I'll work backwards:

These Walls: One of my favorite songs from Octavarium, and unfortunately I think the only performance of it is on that Romavarium fanclub DVD.

Blind Faith: The performance on CiM is just really lackluster for a number of reasons. I'd like to see this professionally done since it's one of Dream Theater's best songs.

The Glass Prison: The Bucharest version is really good, but obviously the audio and video could be a lot better.

Lines in the Sand: Same with Blind Faith, really. The CiM performances just don't cut it.

Caught in a Web: The live performances of this song have been killer lately, and as far as I know the song is only on one of the Bootleg DVDs.

Pull Me Under: The Live in Tokyo version is really good, but considering how it's the bands biggest hit and all it's a surprise a more professional version hasn't been released. Budokan's Pull Me Under has tons of problems, ranging from James' voice sounding thin and flat to the new "warped" arrangement that doesn't really work IMO.

So if these songs appear on the new DVD with my new favorites, like BITS, BTS, and TCoT, I'll be pretty happy.

Honestly, I don't really care to see any Systematic Chaos tunes. Not many of the performances of them on CiM are very good, but neither are the songs IMO. I'm guessing TDEN at least will make the cut, which I'm OK with. It's a fun song.

Scarred. Once In A Livetime was abbreviated (and doesn't count as a DVD release). Chaos In Motion is terrible.

I figured he meant actual Dream Theater DVDs.

The Killing Hand
Metropolis (band-only, Score was the only DVD release of it and it had orchestra, was still awesome though)
Caught in a Web
The Mirror (full song, only Puppies on Acid was released)
Hell's Kitchen
The Glass Prison
Honor Thy Father (only song on TOT without a DVD release!!)
These Walls
Repentance (needs to be documented!! one of my #1 DT songs)

From BCSL, I would really want to see Wither, The Shattered Fortress and The Count recorded. With ADTOE, I would be happy with any or all songs, but there at least needs to be OTBOA, BITS, and BAI. Any other selection is fine since I love every song.

Yes, but it's not the best recording or performance. It's my favourite DT song, and I find that particular performance very underwhelming.

Here are the songs I'd really love to see get some DVD lovin'-
ANTR
TCOT
These Walls
TGP
Blind Faith
Misunderstood

Unfortunately a lot of these aren't likely for the upcoming DVD, but it will still rock!

I'm liking everything you people put up so far. Especially SDV. What I'd like for a DVD performance of that song would be to play it as it is, almost note for note, samples and all, but go crazy on the visuals. Well, not really *crazy*, but have some really cool lights, some nice animation on those monitors, maybe do some stuff like... like Jordan's keys glowing in different shades of blue as he plays or something like that.

I'd agree, if I hadn't given up on the possibility that Scarred can be very good live. It's been underwhelming on every single live release (unofficial or not) so far, so I'm thinking it's just not a great live song. So honestly I'll take another song which can be done will over yet another Scarred performance that just isn't quite right.

I like the Bucharest version of Scarred, but as a Scarred for life-er, I'd like to hear more of it!

Edit: There's a Nightingale song called Scarred For Life. Aside from Scarred itself, that should really be our anthem :D

I felt the same way. Such a sombre ballad really needs that very slow tempo maintained, or else it loses the mood. I don't like the Budokan version because it's too fast, even though I love the song itself.

Yeah, basically all of this.

Say, isn't there a bootleg of Disappear's other performance? Is that any better?

Out of the pre-BC&SL stuff:

The Mirror/Lie (we only have Puppies on Acid on DVD)
Caught in a Web
These Walls
The Great Debate (the version on the Score bonus disc isn't high quality enough IMO)
Honor Thy Father (same as TGD)
Learning to Live (we need a version where James nails the F#)
The Silent Man (the acoustic version, which I guess will be on the upcoming release)
Any WDADU song except for OAMOT and Afterlife

I'd also like to see Scarred and Blind Faith with better vocals by James.

EDIT: Misunderstood would be nice as well

Panic Attack was on there too. So that's 2 dream theater songs, and between the two songs, they had more time on the DVD than any other band. Besides, it's an awesome DVD regardless, I think any Metal fan should have it.

I'd agree, if I hadn't given up on the possibility that Scarred can be very good live. So honestly I'll take another song which can be done will over yet another Scarred performance that just isn't quite right.

Actually, I do enjoy the OIALT version of Scarred quite a bit. It's just, well.... not the best sound quality, and James sounds a bit thin at times. I dunno, I read an interview with him a while back where he said that Scarred was his favorite song to sing, so I'd love to hear him get another crack at it.

...At least, I think he said "favorite." There's a fifty-fifty chance I'm misremembering, and he said "least favorite," but I'll stand by it for the moment.
