I listened to a podcast the other day about Switzerland. The interesting part was, despite it being all neutral and independent, all that that independence bought Switzerland was that it still had to abide by EU rules, but it had no say in the making of them.
I can only foresee the same thing happening to the UK if they decide to actively withdraw from the EU. All you're gaining is irrelevance, and you still have to play by the EU's rules.
