Please Don't Ask
The Phil Collins weepy sad breakup songs used to bug me a lot more than they do now. Maybe it's just because I'm older now and have been through some of the shit that he sings about in those songs, and maybe because I'm over the initial knee-jerk reaction to them showing up on Genesis albums. But I've come to actually like some of them.
There's a lot of alienation on Duke; it's one of the central themes of the album. In a way, the story of Duke has some parallel to what Phil was going through at the time, and even though the Duke suite is just the six songs, the other six songs fit in rather well, and you could weave a narrative that includes them without much fuss. Alone Tonight is depressing, but we've all been there, and it's a good song. Please Don't Ask used to bug me, but now I kinda like it. He hasn't seen her in a while, and they'll never get back together, but she looks good and he has to tell her that. Most of all, he misses his son, who she obviously has full custody of. If my wife and I divorced and I never got to see my kids, man, that would kill me. So I think I like Please Don't Ask a bit more than Alone Tonight. It still has to go, though.
