Spoiler window option
« on: May 14, 2012, 07:10:29 AM »
Can we get it to allow to simply click a button to extend a spoiler window, rather than always having to create text in small font.

I'd be down with this. The small text is very impractical - there are lots of browsers (not mine!) that inflate small text automatically, so a fair few people aren't spoiler-protected at all under the current system. Just as frustrating, though, is if I've got something on the clipboard that I want to save, I've got to open up a text document and copy it in if I want to read what's been typed without losing my copied data. And often, what they've said is banal, and when you copy it into a separate document you lose context (or, in a particularly massive spoiler conversation, you can even lose track of who's saying what)...

Wouldn't want to make too much extra work for anyone, but it's something that could definitely do with tweaking if anyone's got a rainy day they'd like to donate.

^Isn't it easiest just to click "quote" and read the plaintext, rather than copying every bit of small text?

Anyway, I agree that our current system is at best annoying and at worst completely useless (in the case of browsers that manually enlarge tiny text). Anyway, more than a spoiler window (which many of our popup blockers would probably catch anyway), can't we just use a spoiler box system that expands only when you press "show"? Most forums have some variation on this:

This is a really very simple hack; I'm not really aware of the inner workings of this forum software, but as long as the forumcode is just getting converted to html, a [spoiler] tag would be easily implementable with a bit of Javascript.

+ 1 million on this.

It's been suggested numerous times (including by me I think) and I am so in favor. A little button to click to unhide the text would be just perfect.

I don't expect the coding to be too difficult, probably many free variations out there for this board's code platform.

I think this has been looked into in the past but couldn't be implemented for one reason or another. But yeah, if it gets looked back into and can be done I'd love it to happen.

It's situational! Better for a single post, but worse if I'm trying to read a conversation.

THe second solution actually looks rather elegant. I will have a look into it as soon as possible but I am away on experiment at the moment so it wont be in the next week or two.

What? Your life is not entirely dedicated to the forum? What kind of moderator are you??

I'm just kidding, have fun with the experiment  :D

XJ's lying anyway. He's at my house building a Rube Goldberg machine.

I was thinking about this because I agree: the small text is annoying.

It turns out the second link of the two that were posted above is exactly how I thought this type of thing would be implemented.
It would also take literally five minutes to add, if that.

So, why does it seem like this was abandoned a year ago?

The reason it was abandoned was because looking into coding for DTF whilst also writing a PhD thesis turned out to be overly optimistic.

During the summer break however I will be dedicating some weekends to look at a number of improvements to the site. This will be one of them. You have my word this time.

Well, you have his word that it will be looked into.  Whether it will be implemented depends on:
1.  Whether it looks like it will work with this version of forum softwear without creating errors; and
2.  Whether bosk1 lets him.

We could just put the transparent color into the drop down box and use that as the standard method of placing spoilers from now on.

But then you'd still have to quote it to read it. The point of the spoiler tag is just click or whatever to read.

Also: tapatalk would be REALLY nice :)

Huh, highlighting shows the text for me.

Works for me too. But a proper spoiler option would still be preferable for compatibility and clarity. Thanks to XJ for looking into this in future. It will be very useful for movie/TV discussion. :tup

I don't disagree, but transparent doesn't require any changes for bosk1 to worry about. Maybe we should just start using this as the standard, anyways. Some might still have to quote, but it hides the text well and is easy to uncover if highlighting works. ...starting to use this won't change that something else can be put in.

Also, instead of a full spoiler box, it might be easier to set [spoiler] to change text color and background color to the same value. That's better than transparent since everyone can 'see' the hidden text. BB code doesn't have a default set text background color option that I know of, though, so I don't know how hard it would be,
