Sabaton
« on: April 22, 2012, 03:55:01 PM »
Anybody fans of this band? I've become a big fan lately, and I saw their show the other night - I'll venture to say...the greatest, funnest live show I've ever attended.

Here's a couple of their better known songs.

From what I've heard, they're pretty sweet, but I don't know a good starting point.

I was introduced to the band from this video:

For those who don't play WoW, it's funny because they're playing a capture the flag game where the flag carrier is supposed to run like hell to the other side of the map....but they're casually strolling across the field while an epic Sabaton song is playing. :rollin

I'm not familiar with their entire catalog, but "The Art of War" and "Primo Victoria" are my favorite albums so far.

I accidentally listened to a Sabaton track the other day on Spotify, "The Final Solution". By the time they arrived at the lyrics "Open the gates, Auschwitz awaits" I was stunned in disbelief.

Rumby, all of their songs are lyrically focused on past wars. They can write music about Nazism without advocating it in order to cover all sides of the spectrum. I haven't heard the song in question, but I'm willing to bet it was written from the point of view of the Nazis, not the band members, and is meant to be understood in that manner.

Sabaton has been epic for a long long time. I don't listen much, but the historical references always present = epicness.

Plus, rumby, all they do is tell stories. They try to be as historically accurate as possible, and they don't bring in their own point of views.

Saw them open for Accept/Overkill last year, wasn't familiar with them but they seemed like a tight live band

liked what I heard but not enough to run out and get the discography

I saw them a few weeks ago(in sweden so some songs were in swedish which was nice), Easily the wildest concert I have ever been to, though I haven't been to a lot :(

I've wondered about these guys because they'll be opening for Iced Earth when I see them in a few months.  Anyone have a recommendation for the best album to start with for them?

Pretty much any album will work, they're all cut from the same mold, so to speak. Attero Dominatus is my favorite of the ones I've heard, though.

I was not necessarily saying they were advocating Nazism. It was the almost obscene clunkiness of their lyrics for a topic that needs incredible sensitivity.
I mean, I know that not everybody can be a Neil Part, but I can only submit how far away Rush's "Red Sector A" is from "Open the gates, Auschwitz awaits".
Maybe they don't advocate anything, but I'm sure lyrics like that were received with open arms in the Neonazi scene.

Their other song about Nazi Germany is literally called "The Rise of Evil". I hardly think Nazis are going to relate to that.

Just listened to Carolus Rex for the first time in quite a while. It slays, probably their best record. Really can't wait for the new one!

New album out yesterday. Title: Heroes.

Despite a new lineup, some very strong material on this album. :metal as usual. Not as good as previous efforts though.

Yeah I got a copy on Friday, took me about 8 plays to fully digest everything and start to really get into it.
Yes it's not an epic album at all, it's more like a quick smash in the face.

But I disagree, I think it's a brilliant album in it's own right, it's a lot less power metal and more traditional in many ways.
I guess the new line up have shaken things up a bit, with new ideas and there's a definite old school metal feel to many of the songs.

I rate it 9.5/10, album of the year and sits easily along side the rest of the Sabaton catalogue.

They were great when I saw them on the 15th.  They were amazed at how well we enjoyed their stuff,  first time being in New Mexico for them and Revamp. Saw the singer outside a microbrewery after the show with 2 growlers of Jackalope IPA, its a good local craft beer.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

Just heard The Last Stand. It's really good. My favorite song is probably the title track.
