I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Sorry bud.
I have a question for you, lonestar;

How would you best describe life in San Francisco in however long or short a length of text you care?

Simply put, the SF Bay Area is home to me.  I have lived here since 1976, with a small break from '93 to '98, when I lived in Atlanta and Sacramento.  No matter where else I go, I never have that feeling of being at home that I do when I am here.  I live in a suburb across the bay and the Oakland hills from the City, but all of the area is within easy access, an hour drive or so at the most.  The weather here can't be beat, a steady 70 degrees most of the year, with some hot and cold spots.  The people are wonderful for the most part and very diverse, never a dull moment.  I am near my beloved alma mater, the University of California at Berkeley, and the town in which it resides, which I can never grow tired of.  As long as you stay away from gangland, Oakland is an incredible town, with some of the best up and coming restaurants around.  The City itself, I don't actually get to much, except for Giant's games and special events, there is enough on my side of the bay to keep me occupied, plus I'm not a big city type of person anyways.  One of the special side effects of touring the City with Nem and Jackie, two ladies who had never been there, was an even greater appreciation of where I live, something I acquired by seeing it through their eyes.  As I told Jackie towards the end of our day, I may live elsewhere, but the Bay Area is my home, and I love it.

RJ, I have questions for ya :eyebrows:

What would you recommend as a decent tasting, cheap, easy to make meal?

What's your favorite food?

What kind of cigarettes do you smoke?

What's your favorite place in San Fran?

What's your favorite book?

1-What would you recommend as a decent tasting, cheap, easy to make meal?

2-What's your favorite food?

3-What kind of cigarettes do you smoke?

4-What's your favorite place in San Fran?

5-What's your favorite book?

1- A family dish we called American Chop Suey, it's kind of a beef and tomato sauce with noodles.  One onion diced, a pound of ground beef, a can of diced tomatos, a can of tomato sauce, some garlic, dried italian seasoning, and elbow noodles.  Brown the beef and drain, add the onions and cook, add the garlic, add the tomato products and herbs, stew for an hour or so on low heat.  Cook the noodles and strain, then mix them with the sauce.  For a college student, its enough for a week of meals.

2- Comfort foods- cheese pizza
Fine dining- braised lamb shank with a rich mushroom polenta, sexiest fucking thing on earth.

3- Marlboro Lights

4- AT&T Park, easily,  motherfucking GO GIANT'S!!!!!!!

5- I'll list three, Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, and Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury,  I have a ton others but these three will always be a touch above the rest for the deep connection and meaning they hold for me.

I got into cooking through my brothers, then cooked my way through college.  When I got out of college, my kid was born, and I needed to work as opposed to pursuing the field of my choice(child counseling).  I eventually came to love it, and can't see myself doing anything else.

Famous peeps, damn that's a long fucking list, so I'll just post the highlights....

Barbara Streisand
Joe Montana
Rickey Henderson
Tre Cool
Scott Bakula
Brad and Angelina
Wayans Brothers
Tony LaRussa
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Vice President Biden
Michelle Obama
Bill Nye the Science Guy
Willie McCovey

And my personal highlight of my career.....

Stephen Hawking, he is the only person I broke the rules and introduced myself to, I felt like I was in front of the Pope.

Those are the bigger ones that come to mind right now, I think the only others I would break the rules for would be Pete Townshend, any member of Yes or DT, or Patrick Stewart.  Sports guys are usually pretty cool, actors tend to be dicks, politicians wave at you from a distance.

Great story about the Biden visit, I had an allergic reaction to medicine right before he showed up and was taken away in an ambulance.  There were hundreds of secret service, cops, FBI, etc. roaming all over the hotel.  As the ambulance was leaving the exit road, I noticed a cop with the lights rolling behind us, and said so to the paramedic(I had been stabilized at this point).  The driver said there was one in front of us too, and that we were recieving a police escort to the hospital. :hat

What advice would you give to a man who has basically no cooking ability whatsoever, 'cos he's really slow and fussy at everything he does as he's got basically no hand eye co-ordination whatsoever and it takes him about ten minutes to slice some cheese and put it on some croissants; I mean he can basically boil things, microwave things, slice bread and grate cheese on things and that's about it, and basically what I'm saying is what cooking advice would you give to an abject novice like me?

I, like you love sports and music.  Who molded you to love both and how did you become a prog fan and who are your favorite players in both music and sports?

Great question, especially for the sports part.  I'll do the music first though.  I have four older brothers, and they influenced me heavily iin my music.  My oldest brother, Mark, was a DJ at his HS radio station when I was about seven, and used to have a shit ton of 45s laying around, always got the newest stuff, and was playing tunes constantly.  I took to music immediatly, and at that young age, Yes was a favorite, Yessongs to be specific, Moving pictures was one too.  Forward to me in HS, a pissed of rebellious pot smoking metalhead.  A friend of my other brother Mike had shown us Marillion's Misplaced Childhood.  This cracked me out of my metalhead phase, and I began to pursue Marillion with a fanboyish fervor, which wasn't easy in the pre-internet days.  I think I did it because it was something no one else in school listened to, and I was screaming for my own identity away from my brothers and my friends.  This same guy, his name was Kieth, then gave me IQ's Are You Sitting Comfortably, and I began to pursue them, even though this album was done with the interim singer Paul Menel.  Once I got my hands on The Wake and Tales from The Lush Attic with Peter Nichols at the helm, I knew I had found my musical direction.  Hearing Pull Me Under on the radio a few years later solidified it, especially since DT was a band I found all on my own, they were my love, coming from within me, no one else.  As to my favorites, Pete Townshend is a cut above all others.  His music pushed me through all the angry years, and I identified with all that he wrote, he has been a constant force, with the Who and solo, throughout my life.  Seeing him live the first time was a huge moment.  Others are Steve Howe, Jon Anderson, Fish, Peter Nichols, Paul Cook, Ray Davies, Portnoy and Petrucci.

For sports, that's a much deeper question.  For molding me, that goes to my dad and grandfather.  Since the day I was born, I was taken to home games of Cal and Stanford football, my dad being a Cal Fan, and grandpa pulling for Stanfurd.  It was as intrinsic a part of my childhood as Christmas and Lego's.  The defining moment came in '82, my dad was away on a trip, and grandpa took me to the Big Game, Cal vs Stanfurd.  Then this happened...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fZCCAqoSwY

(I still get misty eyed every time I watch it)  Needless to say gramps wasn't too happy, and I was just stunned.  I was on the fence about which school I liked more, and it seemed to me that God himself reached his hand down to touch me and say"you shall be a Cal fan."  On the way out of the stadium, surrounded by a shitload of pissed Stanfurd fans, my grandpa pulled me aside to tell me,"RJ, I want you to remember this moment.  30 years from now, every asshole in the country is going to say they were here today, but you were.  What you saw is a once in a lifetime moment, it will never happen again."  I feel that he gave me the deep love of sports by setting aside his anger over the game to help hone the love of sports in his grandson, showing me that winning and losing isn't everything, but being in the moment with family is.  He passed away about five years ago, and each of his grandsons had a similar story to tell at his funeral.  I miss him dearly to this day.  As to favorite players, they change from year to year, but Montana and Will Clark will always have a place in my heart, but pro sports always take a backseat to the Cal Bears, they are my passion.  I am not kidding that when I die, I want my family to scatter my ashes at Memorial Stadium, I want to rest where I know I am always at peace, in a state of love, and always with family.

Marry well, until then, lots of practice.  If you can, The Better Homes and Gardens cookbook is a great primer for people who can't instinctively cook, the recipes are simple and good(though very American, just remembered your on the other side of the pond).  Things like knife skills are a learned thing, practice them often.

Have you ever served a special that wasn't well recieved by you're cuctomers? If so, how did you take it personally?

All the time.  People's taste in food is, I'm convinced, the most diverse thing on the planet, I am never going to please everyone.  That said, I have had some real bad ideas, though none come to mind right now.  The important thing for me is to move on and learn from it.  My old boss used to say,"no matter how hot a chick is, there is someone who is sick of her shit".  The same thing applies to food, no matter how good a special is, someone isn't going to like it.  If I get butthurt every time someone bitches about my food being too bold or too salty, I would slash my wrist within a week.  I remember a while back Tempus said here that he needs to write for himself, and let the world take it as is, I like to cook the same way, I cook what I like, and offer it to the customer to take as is.  If they love it, then the satisfaction I get from doing a job well is that much more because I was honest and didn't sell out to other, trendy ideas.  If they don't like it, then I find out where I went wrong, and learn from it.

Ooooh I like this thread idea!!

Ok lonestar,

1) Which country would you most like to visit and why? (I'll give you a hint here, the correct answer is Scotland to see me  :P )
2) What's your earliest memory?
3) When was the last time something triggered a strong emotional response from you?

And more importantly,
4) What's your favourite colour?
5)Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
6) Which shoe (left or right) do you put on first?

If California fell into the ocean and you were saved by a helicopter, where would you move and why?
I studied psychology, specializing in child development.  Also had a minor in English.  And I studied lots of Asian chicks. And mushrooms and pot.

And I would move to or near Ithaca New York, that is where my daughter is going to school next year.

Favorite Giant of all time?

Will Clark, the hit up the middle against the Cubs in the '89 NLCS will be forever etched in memory.

Ooooh I like this thread idea!!

4) What's your favourite colour?
5)Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
6) Which shoe (left or right) do you put on first?

Gonna mix these up a bit...
4- Blue, specifically, UC Berkeley blue
5- All over the fucking thing, I'm quite the restless sleeper.
6- Left, I actually just put my shoes on, so I remembered.
1- My family is half Irish, half Spanish, though I have always identified with the Irish half, so Ireland would be the answer to that one.  You're more than welcome to come over and spend a day with me though, I'll buy the first round.
2- When I was four, my brothers and I were playing baseball in the backyard. After a lunch break, I ran out to claim third base and jumped on a broken peanut butter jar, almost severing my toe off.  Being in the back seat of the car heading to the hospital gushing blood would be that memory.
3- Seeing that I'm still in early alcoholic recovery, almost everything triggers an emotional response from me.  The last big one though was when I was about five months in that recovery, and ADTOE came out.  I listened to it beginning to end in a cafe courtyard.  When I got to Beneath the Surface, I was not ready for the power of that song.  The line"and then one day I stopped caring, and began to forget why I longed to be so close" hit home, hard.  That is the death of spirituality that alcoholism creates, that loss of desire to be close to your fellow man, especially those who love you.  I had a good ten minute cry in that cafe, not giving a fuck who saw me.  I still believe that moment was when I really started caring again, and started to reach out and let others help me in my healing process, my progress since doing that has been monumental.

OK kids, gotta go to work, keep posting the questions, I'm having a fucking blast doing this.  I'll probably get back to answering in the afternoon when lunch is over.

is it just me that has a strict side of the bed thing then??

I've always been one side of the bed.  Standing at the foot of the bed, facing it, I'm always to the right (on the left, laying in it).  I think that's more because the women I've been with have always taken the other side.

Lonestar, what is your favorite cut of steak?  Also, as noted by my many questions for you in the last couple of years, I'm also always looking to learn more about cooking.  I've looked into culinary porgrams at the local colleges and it always includes some "restaurant management" part that you have to study.  I have no desire to manage a restaurant, I just wanna learn to cook better.  Classic techniques, different methods for doing things that might make my current techniques work better or replace my current techniques (i.e. when I learned the proper way to dice an onion, it has gone SO much easier every since), or anything.  I want to be able to craft something awesome, from my own knowledge, not necessarily always follow a recipe.  That said, how much of the "restaurant management" part of your culinary studies do you really engage in regularly?

Any food you wouldn't try?
Foods you just fucking hate?
Ever fed something to a stranger that you wouldn't feed to somebody you liked?

Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

is it just me that has a strict side of the bed thing then??

I've always been one side of the bed.  Standing at the foot of the bed, facing it, I'm always to the right (on the left, laying in it).  I think that's more because the women I've been with have always taken the other side.

Haha I'm like the women then, right side is my side

This is a good way of getting to know forum people.

Definitely!

And I would move to or near Ithaca New York, that is where my daughter is going to school next year.

I won't say which one, but I have an application in at one of the two schools in Ithica.  If I end up there I can be your proxy shotgun toting dad.

Yes he is,but he is SF's dick, and we love him. That hit is why I'm a Giant's fan and not an Oakland AAA's fan.

Ill get to the other questions when I get to a proper keyboard, just had to defend my boy real quick.
