Your Favorite "One-Two Punch" from each album!
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:54:25 PM »
This is a thread I started a long time ago on a Rush message board and with all the "Your Favorite" threads popping up, I figured I'd throw one into the mix as well.

What you do is pick one pair of songs that are back-to-back on the album that you enjoy the most because they're next to each other!

Some thread-rules and what-nots:
Because SFAM-8VM are connected end-to-beginning with shared/continued sounds, you can throw in which cross-album pair of songs you like most out of the 3 pairs of songs (FF / TGP, SDOIT / AIA or ITNOG / TROAE).

Also, just to make sure everyone actually READS the original post here, I'm counting SCENES and not SONGS/TRACKS from SFAM, so you have 9 scenes to choose from.
For example, you could pick "Scene Two: I. Overture 1928, II. Strange Deja Vu / Scene Three: I. Through My Words, II. Fatal Tragedy" or "Scene Six: Home / Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity, II. One Last Time".

Likewise, the title track to SDOIT is counted as one song, BUT ITPOE will be counted as it's two parts, since it's split. At your discretion, you can count "A Mind Beside Itself" as one.

Additionally, if you WANT, you can choose "Octvarium / The Root of All Eivil" on 8VM because of the albums' cyclical nature.

Everyone ready?

Here's my list:
WDADU - The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun / Only A Matter Of Time
IAW - Wait For Sleep / Learning To Live
Awake - Lifting Shadows Off A Dream / Scarred
FII - Hell's Kitchen / Lines In The Sand ... OR Anna Lee / Trial of Tears (very hard to decide which)
SFAM - Scene Eight: The Spirit Carries On / Scene Nine: Finally Free
SDOIT - Disappear / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
TOT - Stream of Consciousness / In The Name of God
8VM - Sacrificed Sons / Octavarium
SC - The Ministry of Lost Souls / In The Presence of Enemies (Part 2)
BC&SL - The Best of Times / The Count of Tuscany
ADTOE - Far From Heaven / Breaking All Illusions

Cross-Album choice - Finally Free / The Glass Prison

WDADU: two songs in a row that are good? Let's not push it :lol
I&W: Another Day, Take The Time.
Awake: Would anything in AMBI be cheating?
FII: Hell's Kitchen to Lines in the Sand is the obvious answer here
SFAM: Overture 1928 to Strange Deja Vu. I don't care about scene transitions or whatever. Those two are great back to back
SDOIT: Misunderstood / The Great Debate
TOT: Vacant / SOC
8VM: The songs I love are perfectly spaced out as to not allow this :lol
SC: Constant Motion / The Dark Eternal Night. I love that combo. I always listen to them together
BC&SL: ANTR / AROP
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

WDADU - hard to say
I&W - Wait for Sleep/Learning to Live
Awake - Erotomania/Voices - mostly thanks to the AWESOME transition, as Erotomania is probably my least favourite on Awake
FII - Anna Lee/Trial of Tears
SFAM - Through Her Eyes/Home - "How to use contrast properly - guide by Dream Theater"
Six Degrees - very tough.
TOT - This Dying Soul/Endless Sacrifice
Octavarium - Panic Attack/Never Enough - there are better songs on the album, but they work awesome as the "heavy part"
SC - Constant Motion/The Dark Eternal Night - just like above, POWERRRRRRR
BC&SL - The Best of Times/The Count of Tuscany

Cross-album: Finally Free/The Glass Prison. I wish they had continued the links between the albums :(

WDADU – Ytse Jam / The Killing Hand
I&W – Pull Me Under / Another Day (Damn, that was hard)
AWAKE – Caught in a Web / Innocence Faded (easy)
FII – Anna Lee / Trial of Tears (basically I would have chosen a pile of manure along with Trial of Tears for this album)
SFAM - One Last Time / Finally Free (great closers)
6DOIT – Blind Faith / Misunderstood (easy)
TOT – Endless Sacrifice / Honor Thy Father (hrm… not easy)
8VM – Sacrificed Sons / Octavarium (hard to find 2 consecutive songs on this album that aren’t lame)
SC – The Ministry of Lost Souls / In the Presence of Enemies Pt.2 (I like these 2 more than most here seem to)
BC&SL – Wither / The Shattered Fortress (need to listen to this album more)

This was harder than I would have thought.

Resurrection!

Now that BC&SL has been out for a long time, I was wondering what people's thoughts would be on THEIR one-two punch choice for that album now that it's had time to settle.

Also, this is for anyone who never saw this topic before and would like to post!

Interesting.  I somehow didn't see this thread first time around.  Anyhow...

WDADU - The Ytse Jam > The Killing Hand
IAW - Wait For Sleep > Learning To Live
Awake - The Mirror > Lie (I was really tempted to go with Lifting Shadows Off A Dream > Scarred because, even though LSOAD is one of my least favorites on the album as a whole, the outro and transition to Scarred are amazing)
FII - Hell's Kitchen > Lines In The Sand
SFAM - I'm not doing it because I don't like your arbitrary rule and it pisses me off
SDOIT - Misunderstood > The Great Debate
TOT - Stream of Consciousness > In The Name of God
8VM - Sacrificed Sons > Octavarium
SC - ITPOE > Forsaken (this was the hardest)
BC&SL - A Nightmare To Remember > A Right Of Passage

Cross-Album choice - Finally Free > The Glass Prison

SFAM - I'm not doing it because I don't like your arbitrary rule and it pisses me off

For the life of me, I cannot recall why I did that the way I did back then over a year ago, but I really don't care so much now. Besides, it seemed like people picked back-to-back songs instead of scenes anyways, but I think it was more of an allowable suggestion rather than a rule in my mind but ended up becoming a thread rule? Who knows... either way, it's still allowable, but I don't care either way now.

Same with SDOIT - if you *REALLY* want to choose just two parts of SDOIT as your favorite back-to-back tracks on the album, go ahead.

WDADU: My favourites are pretty evenly spaced. Fortune, Ytse, Fuse and Time. Probably A Fortune in Lies into Status Seeker.  Status Seeker is the most fun of all the lower-tier songs, and Fortune is possibly my favourite of the upper-tier.

IAW: Take the Time into Surrounded, narrowly pipping Wait for Sleep into Learning to Live.

AWAKE: 6:00 into Caught in a Web. Short, chunky, fun songs are what Awake does best, and these are two of my favourites in the whole catalogue, in a tier with Erotomania.

FII: Peruvian Skies into Hollow Years. Much as I love Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand - while cool - is not particularly one of my favourites. Peruvian Skies and Hollow Years are my two favourite songs on the album, and they're right next to one another. Their respective extended live versions would gain yet more "cool points."

SCENES: The Spirit Carries On into Finally Free. Although I did originally put Fatal Tragedy into Beyond This Life, my third-favourite into my second-favourite beats my first-favourite into my fourth-favourite. TSCO into FF just keeps on getting better, and while I like FT more than any other song off SFAM, and I do love BTL, it's a sheer drop between them.

SDOIT: Blind Faith into Misunderstood. Probably sacrilege not to put TGP, but I find Misunderstood a lot more fascinating. TGP's thoroughly intense and heavy and that's wonderful, but Misunderstood starts off with a lot more heart, then it gets downright creepy. Love it. Brilliant bit of music.

TRAIN: Stream of Consciousness into In the Name of God. Train of Thought is one of those albums where each successive track is better than the previous, more or less. SOC and ITNOG are both top five tracks for me, so they don't get much better than this.

OCTAVARIUM: Sacrificed Sons into Octavarium, although there's not a weak track among 'em. Recently listened to this on a journey and remembered why I loved it so much. There's not a single moment I'd change.

SYSTEMATIC: Any of the first half would be eligible, but I'm gonna plump for In the Presence of Enemies pt. 1 into Forsaken. I'm more likely to put on Constant Motion into The Dark Eternal Night, but ITPOE/Forsaken is better.

BCSL: The Best of Times into The Count of Tuscany. Back in the day, it would've probably been A Rite of Passage into Wither or Nightmare into Rite, but I've recently finally got into TBOT. Fantastic bit of music, though TCOT is far and away the standout song on the album.

I'm not sure I'd call these one-two punches.  For me, a one-two punch needs to start an album, hence the "one-two."  These are more like back-to-back songs.  For a one-two punch, I'd definitely have to go with "6:00/Caught In a Web."  That's a powerful combo right there!

I can understand that. But "one" and "two" don't necessarily have to mean first and second. It's just the order of things, one being the first song you hear and two being the one immediately following it.

I found this definition to be fitting to the purpose of my thread...
Quote
one-two punch
n.
1. A combination of two blows delivered in rapid succession in boxing, especially a left lead followed by a right cross.
2. Informal - An especially forceful or effective combination or sequence of two things.

Although what you proposed, as being first-two tracks, would make for an interesting poll - which are your favorite first two tracks? Someone else can do that one, though...

-Marc.
