Interesting.  I somehow didn't see this thread first time around.  Anyhow...
My thoughts exactly, but it's a very cool idea.

WDADU - Urgh, nothing really as the songs I'm not keen on are so spread out, but I guess Light Fuse And Get Away > Afterlife is the best.
IAW - Wait For Sleep > Learning To Live
Awake - Erotomania > Voices
FII - Anna Lee > Trial of Tears
SFAM - I also think the rule is weird, but fortunately for me my favourite is The Spirit Carries On > Finally Free, which are whole scenes in themselves.
SDOIT - The Great Debate > Disappear (very, very close though, could easily have been the opening 2 tracks)
TOT - Stream of Consciousness > In The Name of God
8VM - Sacrificed Sons > Octavarium
SC - In the Presence of Enemies part 1 > Forsaken
BC&SL - Wither > The Shattered Fortress (Again tough between this and the closing tracks, but this combo has Wither which is my favourite on the album, so it just edges it)

Cross-Album choice - Finally Free > The Glass Prison

WDADU - Ytse jam > The killing hand
I&W - Wait for sleep > Learning to live
Awake - The silent man > The Mirror
FII - Hell's kitchen > LITS
SFAM - ugh...Scene 3 > scene 4 or scene 6 > 7...hmmm...I think I'll go with 3 > 4
SDOIT - Misunderstood > The great Debate
ToT - Vacant > Stram of consciousness
8VM - Sacrificed sons > Octavarium (Panic attack > Never enough is really gr8 too though)
SC - TMOLS > ITPOE pt2
BC&SL - TBOT > TCOT

Wow, a lot of these were really tough, I've just come to realize DT pretty much never puts my favorite tracks near each other.

Yeah, I mentioned something similar in my post as well.  A DT conspiracy?  :itpoe:

Nah, no conspiracy. Bands tend to do that all the time to encourage you to listen to the entire album and not just your favourite tracks.

WHAT?! At least go buy When Dream And Day Reunite if you want to listen to the whole album live and with LaBrie. If anything it has a killer 14-minute version of "Metropolis" featuring a 7-member Dream Theater on stage! Get the CD, or the DVD, or BOTH for the greatest experience of WDADR.

WDADRU is great for those who like to avoid '89-Charlie, but the problem is that JLB wasn't on top of his game that night. The Metropolis jam makes up for it, though, and also shows how good Derek has become.

Bumping because since this thread, ADTOE has come out, and I'd like to add that the "one-two punch" of "Far From Heaven" and "Breaking All Illusions" is my favorite from the album.

Tricky...

SFAM - Scene Two + Scene Three (1928, SDV, TMW, FT)
SDOIT - Disappear + Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
TOT - Stream of Consciousness + In the Name of God
8VM - Octavarium + The Root of All Evil  (rules said it counted, right?)
SC - In The Presence of Enemies pt 1 + Forsaken
BC&SL - A Nightmare to Remember + A Rite of Passage
ADTOE - Breaking All Illusions + Beneath the Surface
Sincerely,

WDADU - Ytse Jam/The Killing Hand
IAW - Metropolis/Under a Glass Moon
Awake - Erotomania/Voices
FII - Hell's Kitchen / Lines In The Sand ... OR Anna Lee / Trial of Tears (same as OP)
SFAM - Scene 3: Through my Words & Fatal Tragedy/Scene 4: Beyond this Life
SDOIT - The Glass Prison/Blind Faith
TOT - Toughest choice for me I think. I'll go with This Dying Soul/Endless Sacrifice
8VM - Sacrificed Sons/Octavarium
SC - The Ministry of Lost Souls/In The Presence of Enemies (Part 2)
BC&SL - Again tough, but this time because of a lack of quality surrounding the good songs. Suppose it'll have to be The Best of Times/The Count of Tuscany, despite the fact I don't really like TBOT.
ADTOE - Bridges in the Sky/Outcry

WDADU - The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun - Only A Matter Of Time
Images and Words - Wait For Sleep - Learning To Live
Awake - If I had to choose (I really really dislke this album) it would be Erotmanie - Voices
Falling Into Infinity - Hell's Kitchen - Lines In The Sand
Scenes From A Memory - The Spirit Carries On - Finally Free
Six Degrees - The Great Debate - Disappear
Train of Thought - Stream of Consciousness - In The Name of God
Octavarium - Hard to pick between These Walls - I Walk Beside You and Sacrificed Sons - Octavarium
Systematic Chaos - The Ministry of Lost Souls - In The Presence of Enemies Pt 2
Black Clouds - The Best of Times - The Count of Tuscany (only because TCOT is so good, TBOT sucks)
A Dramatic Turn of Events - tough call between This Is The Life - Bridges In The Sky and Far From Heaven - Breaking All Illusions

ADTOE is filled with great one-two punches all over the album.

I guess mine would be FFH-BAI, but I really like the 1-2-3 of OTBOA, BMU BMD, and LNF

The Glass Prison / Blind Faith

Dream and Day - YtseJam / Killing Hand

Images and Words - Wait For Sleep / Learning to Live

Awake - Scarred / Space Dye Vest (oh I went there..)

Falling into Infinity - Gotta be  Hells Kitchen / Lines in the Sand

Scenes - Tough... going with Through My Words , Fatal Tragedy / Beyond this life

Six Degrees - Probably Great Debate / Disappear (I love Disappear intro)

Train of Thought - another toughy... Vacant / Stream of C.

Octavarium  - Panic Attack / Never Enough

Systematic - ITPOE 1 / Forsaken

Black Clouds -  I really dont like any of them... so probably Passage / Wither

ADTOE - argh tough one!  Bridges / Outcry
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

You know what has the most amazing transition between songs? Build Me Up, Break Me Down -> Lost Not Forgotten. Admittedly, BMU,BMD is a weaker song on ADTOE, but that final string section is exactly the type of magic I crave from DT. The most haunting and tragic thing on the album. I wish DT would incorporate more of that atmosphere in the future. And then, the galloping, which flows seamlessly into LNF's piano intro. THEN THAT MAIN RIFF! AND THEN THE TICKLE SECTION! AND THEN THAT WHOPPER OF A CHUGGING RIFF!

Seriously, those 4 minutes right there (BMU,BMD's string section -> LNF's chuggy riff) are some of the best in DT's catalogue, I reckon. But that said, ADTOE's best "One-Two" is Bridges In the Sky + Outcry.
