Roger Waters alllll the way.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I have to go with Waters for song writing. I love the concepts he comes up with. I also usually prefer his singing voice. But Gilmour is a monster guitarist.

Waters for his lyrics and themes.

Gilmour for his musical contributions.

Voted Kevin Moore.

The Wall is probably my most important album ever from a personal standpoint, but I'll still give Gilmour the nod.  Waters is too much of a miserable bastard to vote for. :lol

They're better together, but I give Gilmour the very slightest of edges cuz Division Bell is pretty damn good.

True, and The Final Cut so incredibly depressing that even I can rarely listen to any of it.

The one exception is Not Now John. I love that track.

Exactly that.

Even when taking the solo albums into account: Pros and Cons of Hitchiking (good), Amused to Death (good), On An Island (great).

But on a personal level both aren't the best of guys to get along with, I think.

Wow, this is difficult, I still think I'll vote for Roger Waters.

You know what's weird is that Kevin Moore sort of sounds like Roger Waters.

Amused to Death is my favorite album of all time.

David Gilmour played the solo on Comfortably Numb.

David Gilmour, while Roger wrote some great songs he was nothing without David Gilmour, and I find post-waters floyd more interesting than solo Waters.

I watched the PF reunion from 2005 the other day and Waters seems to be in better shape. Gilmour put on some pounds and looks way older, so I think Waters could take him.

I have never agreed with the "Waters era" vs "Gilmour era" thing, since Gilmour was also in the band the entire time Waters was (except for the very, very beginning) and had a big part in their sound and songwriting.  Yeah, Waters had the grand concepts and wrote the lyrics, but it wasn't the "Waters era".  If anything, it was the classic line-up versus the various fragments that were left when there wasn't enough room for Waters' ego and the other four.

Once Waters left, the magic was gone IMO, so I'd say that that's a strong argument that it took both of them together to make the magic.  Therefore the answer is Mike Portnoy.

Nah, just kidding.  Gilmour.

Gilmour.  Momentary Lapse of Reason is good, and Division Bell is amazing.  On an Island is also great.  Waters didn't impress me with his solo stuff (though I haven't heard Amused to Death, maybe that'll help).

I've heard Amused to Death.  I wasn't THAT impressed with it at all really but I still want to check out his other solo stuff sometime.

Is there a good place to start with Gilmour's solo releases?

On an Island.  His early solo albums aren't anything to brag about, although the song Murder, from 1984's About Face, is a great tune.  But On an Island is the way to go.

Waters might have had grand concepts and visions for his music, but he was quite the one-trick pony in that he was apparently not able to write about anything but dystopic things.
I once read a comment by Phil Collins about him. "Waters has ridiculed Genesis for writing a tune like "I can't dance". He couldn't see the humor in it. In fact, Waters couldn't see the humor in a lot of things."
Steven Wilson incidentally has the same problem.

Gilmour all the way for me.

Gilmour. Waters may have been more creative but Pink Floyd doesn't sound the same without Gilmour.

A perfect example of the whole being greater (by long shot) than the sum of the parts.  Not a huge fan of any of their solo works or PF material dominated by one of their influences.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

This pretty much sums it up for me.  And I am perhaps an anomaly when it comes to PF fans, but I honestly could be happy owning only the following three studio albums:  Dark Side Of The Moon, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and The Division Bell.  There are a lot of individual songs up and down their discography that I truly love.  But in terms of entire albums, those are probably the only 3 that I can say I truly love from top to bottom.  Give me those three and then either Pulse or Delicate Sound of Thunder so I can get a lot of the other individual tracks I like, and I'm good.
