Your Local Street Food Favorites
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:29:18 PM »
My boss wants us to start doing street food daily specials on our menu, items that are traditional classics, and specific to geography.  For example, a Mexican street food would be tacos, and for my area, a crab roll.  I will be doing my own research to find menu items, but I figured since I got an international community of thousands here, I would ask you guys.  So post and talk about your favorite street foods, the things you find everyday comfort in when walking around your favorite city.

I don't know if beignets are served on the streets in NOLA, but if they're not, they should be.

I have to recommend the argentinian Choripan

Quote
The Argentine choripán consists of a sausage made out of beef and pork, hot off the grill, split down the middle, and served on a roll. The chorizo may be used whole or cut in half lengthwise, in which case it is called a mariposa (butterfly). It is customary to add sauces on the bread, most likely chimichurri.

That's exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for, keep them coming.

Drew, as much as id love to do beignets, they are lohistically impossible in my kitchen, having only two fryers and allready three fried items.

There's a pizza truck I go to on campus where they sell different types of rolls such as BBQ, Broccoli and cheese, buffalo and Steak and cheese.

The BBQ roll is on the top cut in two

The thing on the bottom is from a taco stand that I go to. Its the carne ascada burrito.

This is all from Philly btw.

I was about to say
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

I live in a small town, we don't have "street food" the same way that cities do.

But a local dish is the ground steak sandwich.  Here is the recipe direct from one of my favorite local restaurants, the Blue Bird Diner.

Quote
2 lbs of ground chuck (80% lean ... no leaner ... no fatter)
Salt
Pepper
Flour
Water

Brown the ground chuck and finely chop it. Salt and pepper it liberally. The ground steak sandwich is kind of peppery. Drain the grease from the beef.

In a separate container, mix 3 parts water and 1 part flour (1 1/2 cups of water to 1/2 cup of flour) and whisk together, making sure that there are no lumps.

Move your ground chuck into a large pot (cook on medium heat) and add water/flour mixture slowly until the beef reaches desired consistency. The consistency should be similar to a sloppy joe. Best served on a bun or white bread with mayonnaise, slaw and tomato.

It may not sound like much, but it's delicious.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Besides taco trucks of course, the bacon wrapped hot dog with grilled onions they sell from carts in LA. It's glorious.

Although I've never seen them sold directly on the street, Cafe du Monde (the American mecca of beignets) has a place in the French Quarter that's indoors but with two of the four walls knocked out and only having a support column every several feet but otherwise open-air. It's possible that they may be sold on the street here or there since I obviously can't be around to see what goes on at all times.

Empanadas:

Quote
An empanada is a stuffed bread or pastry baked or fried in many countries in Latin America, Southern Europe, and parts of Southeast Asia. The name comes from the verb empanar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread. Empanada is made by folding a dough or bread patty around the stuffing. The stuffing can consist of a variety of meats, cheese, huitlacoche, vegetables or fruits among others.

@Nekov: Empanadas are a family favorite for me, my Spanish grandmother, who is 90, still lovingly makes them for everyone at Christmas.
