Jani Liimatainen was a huge Dream Theater fan.

You know, that kind of explains 5:23 from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1R_JkgOyEY.
Surely one day they'll work out it would be simpler and far more legal just to suckle on each others' teats in a kind of wonderful 69 of eternal calcium goodness.

The new album better be better than the craptastic Unia.

Jani's new band Cain's Offering now has samples of their new album on their website www.cainsoffering.com

Edit: I just noticed a riff from one of Jani's instructional videos from a couple of years ago. I remember hearing a few on Unia also.

I hope they don't stray too far from the Unia sound. By far my favourite record of theirs, though I do admit that it lacked some truly memorable songs.

I really like Sonata, but man - those guys gave me some hearing problems. The sound at their concert was so loud, my ears hurt for days.
I don't suppose you saw them in Utrecht last fall??

Can't wait for the new Sonata Arctica album! I have liked all of their albums and I think they're one of the most exciting bands in metal. And I'm thrilled that they are playing in Portland in September--the only time I've seen them before was when they opened for Nightwish.

I rediscovered SA in 2007 because of Unia. And now they are going back to their traditional sound again. What a disappointment...

Henkka said they are by no means going straight towards their traditional sound, just a different sound than Unia, while maybe having more fast paced songs. Not so much a step back as a step to the side.

Sorry if my wording in the original post was misleading.

Cain's Offering seems really cool, I heard those samples a while ago. I have 3 reasons to get their album;

Jani Liimatainen - Guitarist/Backing Vocals (ex-Sonata Arctica)
Mikko Harkin - Keyboards (ex-Sonata Arctica [Silence])
Timo Kotipelto - Vocals (in Stratovarius)

Awesome!! I'll totally be looking forward to this release. I love Sonata, as Silence was one of the first metal albums I bought, listened to and loved. I, personally love Unia because, as much as I love Ecliptica, it's a powerhouse of different progressions, sounds, themes and voices (lots of crazy voices and harmonies sang by Kakko, which are hard to digest but totally worth it...they reminded me a lot to Queen).

Stratovarius? Well, the main founder and songwriter (Timo Tolkki), left the band, but the other members just got a new guitarist, and are continuing under the same banner.

And they got a damn good guitarist too! There's a video of him doing a medley of a bunch of different songs (dream theater, steve vai, some other things). I think is name is Matias Kupiainen.

Infinite is great. However, both "Elements" were subpar. There were a couple of good songs there (Elements, Eagleheart), but there is no memorable material on such albums.

This! Probably their best two albums. But admittedly after that things fell apart because Elements Pt 2 and Stratovarius kinda sucked.

Episode and Visions are their two best, and Infinite was their last great album. Eagleheart is the only good song on Elements Pt. 1. I don't really have any hopes that they will return to that greatness now that Tolkki is out. Their new album Polaris wasn't really that good.

But Cain's Offering is really something I look forward too, I love the few samples/songs I've heard.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

Eagleheart is just a by the numbers Stratovarius song. The great songs on that album are Elements and Soul of a Vagabond, which are just huge, epic sounding songs that try something a little new. I have to say, for a prog metal forum, it's amazing how many people seem to prefer by-the-numbers power metal to bands actually trying anything new or different.

Yeah, that is a bit odd.

My favorites off of Elements pt. I in order are:

Stratofortress
Soul of a Vagabond
Fantasia
Elements
Learning to Fly

...and the rest are about equal.

But back to Sonata Arctica, their label Nuclear Blast put out a teaser image for a box set, but strangely did not give any information as to what will be inside it.

I certainly hope it's not final, because that little certificate says -/500.

Only 500? I mean, I would probably be one of the first in line to pre-order it, but come on! I don't stand a chance against those Finnatics they have!

Pre orders are out at the official webshop (https://www.fanzone.fi/sonataarctica/alku.cfm?lang=en) for the following items;

The Last Amazing Grays (Single)

A special edition available only at their shop that comes with an exclusive shirt

(Girl version)

And of course, the regular album. No word on the box set as of yet.

Personally, I'll wait for it to go on Amazon or something. Shipping costs from Finland just aren't worth it.

The t-shirt designs aren't bad, but the massive wolf on the guys one is a bit lame. The girls shirt is so much better. :(

It seems that every t-shirt with wolves on it seems to end up with reviews like these:

It sounds good, although none of it really contradicts faemir's worries as 1) she likes Unia, and 2) she seems to be the biggest SA fangirl ever. :lol
