Oh my god.....

...I was going to comment on how detached the love related lyrics were on this album, but then I listened to In the Dark. (Which was written by Henkka, actually. The music, at least) It's so honest and gentle, and what makes it that way is it's something that you wouldn't say necessarily, but something you would feel.

Anyway, after a good listen I can safely say the orchestral arrangements are my favorite part of the album. Those alone may make this my favorite SA album.

First listen complete. Better than the craptastic Unia, for sure, but not as good as any of the albums before that.

Definitely one of my favourite things about the album as well. Gives some of the songs a really epic feel!

But how damn bizarre is Deathaura? Really strange choice for first full song of the album!

@Nick: STFU, Unia is great. :P

I have listened to the new album about 5 times now, and I think it will end up being even more polarizing than Unia. The new album demands much more patience and repeated listenings than their previous offerings. Even Unia had more variety and several catchy songs that you could love immediately, like Paid in Full and It Won't Fade. I wasn't surprised to look online and see that a huge majority of The Days of Grays reviews were negative.
"The Last Amazing Grays" is one of the best songs they have ever done and I hope it will be a crowd favorite at live shows. "Zeroes" is so much fun and reminds me of Edguy. "The Dead Skin" contains the heaviest moments on the album and some of Tony's best screams! And I think the "Everything Fades to Gray" tracks are both pleasant and interesting.
"Juliet" has such an awesome intro and hopefully I'll eventually like the rest of the song too. "Breathing" is a decent song but I'm not sure it's on the level of Sonata's other gorgeous, somewhat melancholy tracks like Last Drop Falls, Under Your Tree, Good Enough is Good Enough, and Draw Me. The other ballad on the album, "As if the World Wasn't Ending" is doing absolutely nothing for me.
I loved Unia and both of the new tracks on their Myspace profile (Last Amazing Grays and Flag in the Ground) so maybe my hopes were impossibly high. This album will definitely be a grower, but I'm much more optimistic than I was after my first listen, where I was practically in a state of shock of how indifferent I was.

I just finished my first two listens, and I gave it my normal first listen treatment - I do something else and want to see if anything grabs my attention and makes me stop.  Sadly, the first listen didn't find anything show-stopping, and I was grading lab reports so I was very susceptable to distraction; as a matter of fact the only time I did stop was because I was surprised I wasn't hearing anything that caught my ear.

Second listen - concentrating on the music - again not impressed.  I'm not going to give up on it, but this certainly isn't the same band I REALLY liked when their first two albums came out.  I haven't had an opinion about a band fall this much since Royal Hunt after "The Mission".  IMO, Sonata's last four albums seems so...forced, formulaic, and uninspired.

I'm not too impressed with it either, but I see that they're not afraid to experiment with some of the tracks.

Woah woah woah, were you expecting power metal? That's not what they're about anymore.

This album does have some really great moments, though. Enough to save it from mediocrity in my eyes.

I was expecting something that was, perhaps a mixture of the old and unia I guess. I don't dig the new style at all really  :-\

The album is growing on me, but it's still not great. Soundwise it's in some weird zone halfway between (the brilliant) Unia and their old stuff. But it lacks any of the big hooks that made those albums good.

I blame the lack of Jani Liimatainen.

I still don't get what happened with him.

I think what attracts me to it is the experimental nature about it.

And yeah, it's between Unia and their other stuff.....but at the same time it's off to the side. Weird.

In case you never knew, in Finland you sort of get drafted into a civil service. You can go into the army for a while, do some other civil service, or go to jail for a while. The bottom line is that you have to act on it. What Jani did is he did nothing about it at all, so he got his passport revoked. No touring, no anything. And if he drew too much attention he would probably go to jail. Some guys in the band think it was his way of saying that he did not want to be in the band anymore.

He was always my favourite in the band :( (especially after seeing the extras on the SA dvd of their party and the marker pen etc  ;)

Update: Yep, this album is definitely a grower. I am appreciating it more with each listen (especially when pot is involved :). This one took a lot longer than most to enjoy, but that's the mysterious world of metal for you. I think my favorite songs are going to end up being "Last Amazing Grays," "Zeroes," "The Dead Skin," "Breathing," and "Everything Fades to Gray." It's never going to be as good as Silence or Unia, but I think I will listen to it as often. And the album cover is just perfect!

Zeroes is just so......"What the hell is going on?!?!?"  :lol

It's really not a bad album. As of right now, I'd say....

1. Winterheart's Guild
2. Silence
3. Reckoning Night
4. The Days of Grays
5. Unia
6. Ecliptica

....but mind you that I love their first 5 albums very much. And I'll never understand why people don't enjoy Winterheart's Guild.

My rankings right now:
1. Reckoning Night
2. Silence
3. Unia
4. The Days of Grays
5. Ecliptica
6. Winterheart's Guild

TDOG is great, but it's not quite as good as Unia, and is almost barren of power metal.

And I'll never understand why people don't enjoy Winterheart's Guild.

Well, as far as WG goes, I only like The Cage.  That's it, really. =/

Mr. Neccy, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this board is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I just listened to The Days of Grays intensively for the first time. And what can I say? I'm SO HAPPY that it's one step closer to Reckoning Night. Because Unia was such a disappointment to me.

Zeroes is my favourite song so far, but i've only heard the album three times in total, so don't take that too seriously.

OK, my favorite tracks so far:

1. The Last Amazing Grays  :metal
2. The Dead Skin
3. Flag In The Ground
4. Zeroes

And my new album rankings:

1. Reckoning Night
2. Silence
3. Unia
4. Winterheart's Guild & The Days Of Greys
6. Ecliptica

2, 3 and 4 are terribly close though.  :P
Surely one day they'll work out it would be simpler and far more legal just to suckle on each others' teats in a kind of wonderful 69 of eternal calcium goodness.

So I just saw SA tonight. It was of course awesome, but somewhat disappointing simply because they only had time to play a few songs. I can't remember exactly, but I think the set went something like:

1. In Black And White
2. Flag In The Ground
3. Last Drop Falls
4. 8th Commandment
5. Full Moon
6. Don't Say A Word
Plus: "Vodka" ;D

Speaking of which, I just listened to Blank File for the first time in a while, and I must say, the "wooooooooooaaaahh!!" etc etc part towards the end around 3:44 has to be one of my favorite parts of any song, ever.

It's not bad at all, but some songs drag it down a bit (namely Unopened and Picturing the past).
The first 4 song are amongst my favorites though.
