What do you do in between jobs?
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:23:26 AM »
I've moved around in the past between cities to find work but having been able to build up something like a life here I'm reluctantly applying for work elsewhere.

My question is - do you wait around and endure the uncertainty and hit on ego of not having a job for a month or so in order to keep your friends, activities, life in your current area or do you want to save face and do anything and everything including moving around to make sure you keep working ASAP?

Just kidding bud, if you love where you live, stay there.  And what the hell does ego have to do with it, if you aren't going to go broke, enjoy the time off.

Depending on the job I'd just 'left' I might just enjoy the time off for a bit.

Assuming I won't go broke and can get unemployment that is.

Probably should have nothing to do with it ideally. But I think you have to give an account to yourself ultimately if you're making good use of your time.

I'm in between jobs right now, and I'm doing free-lance graphic design!  It's a lot of fun, but the pay isn't great.  I pretty much try to turn my hobbies into $$$

I can understand that if you have been switching jobs often, but if, say, I decided to leave my present gig after 8 years, I would have no qualms and zero guilt over being a lush for a month.

I dont think moving just to not have a gap in employment is a good idea, especially if you enjoy where you live. Finding a good location, friends, and a "life" is a lot harder than finding a job. Unless you cant afford to be unemployed for some time.

Well, because I want to also at least try to help, I will say that getting some kind of training or education between jobs would be beneficial.  Use the down time to look for a new job, but also try to do something to increase your marketability.

I did that in between jobs (only a month or so) when I was 18.
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

What like diplomas or short courses?

Back in 1998 when I was between jobs I took a 9 month diploma course on the TCP/IP networking protocol.  The fact that I had that certificate got my resume moved to a pile of interview candidates for the position eventually evolved into the one I currently hold.
