Vocal preamps
« on: February 13, 2012, 05:21:04 PM »
Do any of you singers use them? I never thought of using one, but someone mentioned it a few nights ago and I thought that one might really help me in live applications. I have a decent singing voice, but it's not overly strong.
I wondered if anyone knew much about them. I'd also like to know if this is an item that you have to buy a high end one to get good sound quality.

I don't know how much a pre amp is going to help you in a live situation.  I mean, you can run a nice mic pre, but if its going through a bad PA then it's still going to sound bad.  Also, mixing boards have their own pre's so not sure why you would need another one really unless you were going for some really pro sounding stuff.

For recording I think having an outboard nice tube pre amp is necessary, but for live, I'm not too sure if it is worth it.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

Yeah, for live stuff you're kind of at the mercy of the venue's signal chain.  Unless you're carting around your own PA?

A good vocal compressor is what you want.

Then you may find this an informative read. Found the site through twitter a while back and there's a TON of really good info there.
