  • and that is the truth.
It was two back in the old typewriter days. Now word processing programs automatically make a space after a period longer. One is the only correct answer. Two looks far too wide these days.

It's funny, I never even noticed that people used 2 spaces. But now I can't unsee it.

Same.

Even though the two spaces was for typewriting, I was taught to use two spaces in computer classes in grade school and high school.

I used to always use two spaces. Now I don't know. Right now I'm using one. I think I decided to switch to one on this forum. Whenever I write a paper for a class, I'll use two.

:rollin So divided, these opinions of spaces after punctuation. I'm one of the few that hasn't even heard a word of this; not in school, not in the many conversations I've had with friends discussion grammar and spelling, nowhere...never. I find it very odd and it also looks a bit skewed.  I dunno.  See...  This feels totally awkward.

Shit sucks. One space.

I find it odd, seeing such dishevelment over use of spaces. I mean, really, who reads anymore?  Or types for that matter?

When I was young, it was two spaces.  After I got married, I tried to get as much space as possible after each period.

:rollin Oh Loney, you slay me. I was trying to think of a period joke but couldn't come up with one. I'm glad I didn't because I would've been dunked on.

Typically, it's 2 to create separation of sentences but a period already does that pretty much.  I just used 2.

The real question should be..........how many periods to fill the space?

Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

MLA used to say 2, and that's what I always followed. It has since changed to 1, so that's what I currently use.

I believe this is correct, which would be why it was ingrained in me to use 2.  MLA was my Bible in undergrad.  Now I have to use 2; it's like a part of me.  It really bothers me to just see 1.  Hell, I use 2 spaces when I text.  LOL.

I actually just like to use a lot of ellipses... it really gives that sense of "pause".... you know..? Much better than a single period...those just don't cut it for me...

I use 3 periods ... to end most sentences, so if I were to put 2 spaces between each it would look quite silly .  .  .

I've always used two by habit as well, but it seems that may not be the rule of thumb any more.

What's nice is using a typesetting language, like LaTeX, where whoever you are writing for can define the convention.  You type, provided style files determine stuff like how many spaces after a period.
