On the Backs of Angels -- best song off ATDOE?
« on: January 27, 2012, 06:18:59 PM »
I think it is. I really think it is. It's so energetic, so lively, yet not in a corny metal way. The two solos are very tasteful, there's no fluff, LaBrie nails the delivery...if there's anything to complain about, it's that it's very cookie-cutter DT, but really that's nothing to complain about...I am really very impressed with OTBOA, even to the point where I'd say it's better than TCOT or anything else since 8VM. It's that good.

It's a great song, but Lost Not Forgotten, Bridges in the Sky, and Breaking All Illusions are on ADTOE as well.

This - but, really, nothing could be worse than everything after 6DOIT.  This album renewed my faith in their ability to actually write good songs!

If "Constant Motion" was the oldest son - good, but a bit reckless and wild - and "A Rite Of Passage" was the awkward middle-child that never got enough attention - then "On The Backs Of Angels" is the smart, interesting kid with great ideas.

I do rank OTBOA pretty high on the album, and even among other DT songs, especially the latter-era "singles".

Everything? Surely some of the songs on TOT and 8VM aren't that bad.

I like it, but it's not the best from ADTOE. Top 5 for sure, but not the best. And for a lead-off single, it's surprisingly complex compared to AROP or CM

It's a great song, but it's on the same album as Breaking All Illusions and Bridges in the Sky, so sorry, no, it isn't.

I like the song a lot, but it's not the best on the album. LNF, BITS, TITL, BAI are better imo. I actually find OTBOA to be a bit sterile for DT, although well written enough.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I love OTBoA but it comes second to last on my favorites of the nine tracks on ADToE. What an album.

It's indeed a great song, but the best? Personally I'd rank it somewhere in the middle, with BAI right smack on top.

Nah, it's easily the worst song on the album.

¿Seriously? ¿Worse than BMUBMD?

IMO, OTBOA is a great song, but TITL, BAI, BITS and maybe Outcry are better.

It's the best for me. It's because when I listen to the guitar intro and then the song building up, I remember that day when I was constantly hitting refresh waiting for it on Roadrunner's channel and waiting to listen to the new DT. It has been connected with a memory so it has become kind of special compared to the other songs.

God knows for how long this song blew my mind.... spent days and days giving it listens and I was about to lose it.. it made me love my all-time-fave band even more.... that effect decreased once the album came out... mostly because of overhearing it... I'm bloody sure that its ranking would be higher (for me) if it came out along with the rest of the songs.....

It is fantastic!

Breaking All Illusions and Outcry are easily better than it. Bridges In The Sky and possibly Lost Not Forgotten too. So not the best on ADTOE, it is good though. Oh, and several from Black Clouds and Systematic Chaos are better.

My least favourite on the album but that still leaves it being a really good song. I don't usually waste my time ranking songs on an album, even though I'm a DT fan  ;D. Do I skip it? Occasionally, but not often. Do I skip any of the others? No. Do I sometimes skip straight to BAI before going back to the start of the album? Guilty as charged.
