Glad to see the love for Boston.

Evergrey is next on my list to check out.

Recreation day is a very nice choice. As for Boston, everybody loves their debut, of course, but I actually prefer Don't look back. Still, a cool start, I'll follow this.  :tup

Really?  I always thought Don't Look Back was their worst album, at least until they released Corporate America.

I dig Evergrey, but I think I prefer "Dead Heart in a Dead World"  Still, they're a great band with a very unique vocalist.   :metal

46. Amorphis - Am Universum

Amorphis are like Evergrey in the sense that within their market they might not be revolutionary, but they have carved out a unique edge to their sound that can be easily picked up on by any fan. That sound is certainly present on Am Universum, an album that I find to be their strongest. Sure, I may not enjoy the growling on later albums as much as most (though I do appreciate how Amorphis uses growls more than 95% of bands), but I do think even in the songwriting that this album tops them all.

Favorite tracks: Crimson Wave, Grieve Stricken Heart, The Night is Over

Yeah, I did it to keep it a lot more interesting. Otherwise there are 3-5 bands who might have 3-5 albums each and that would really cut down on the variety in this thing.

I think like 5 DT albums would be in my top 50. I wouldn't want to limit my list just because it seems like excess if I really do like those albums that much.

45. Spock's Beard - Octane

I have to give Spock's Beard a lot of credit of late. As things got tougher and tougher on the band they've managed to recently put out a fantastic album and have found able replacements to carry on after losing their 2nd mainman in their career. But Octane takes us back a few years. Coming off of the heels of a solid Feel Euphoria album, Octane sees Spock's Beard establish themselves once again as a prog-rock leader post-Neal Morse. Some of the shorter tracks on Octane exceed anything or similar length the band was able to accomplish with Neal in the band.

Favorite tracks: She is Everything, Climbing Up That Hill, Surfing Down the Avalanche

Octane rules. I always got the sense that V and Snow were the favorites here (both incredible albums) but I actually prefer Octane and Day For Night.

Don't Look Back is very good.

Nice job, Nick on the Boston selection.

Not sure about Evergrey and I've never heard Spock's Beard..
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

What's wrong with it? I guess Party and Used to bad news are not that great, but all other tracks are brilliant in my opinion.

And I really like Octane, so it's a pleasant surprise to see it in someone's top 50 list.  :tup

I agree.  In terms of how often to I listen to each SB album, Snow only beats Beware of Darkness.  The problem is there is about 1.3 albums worth of material stretched out to make a double album.  The highs are high, but the lows are probably SB lows on that album.

Nick failed to mention that the only proper way to own Octane is to get the 2 disc version.

I sadly do not own the 2-disc version, but it's on my list.

As for Boston, I think Don't Look Back is a strong album, and even features my favorite song, the title track, which in turn features one of my favorite guitar leads of all time.

Wrong... nothing, really.  I just think Boston and Third Stage are excellent, and Walk On nearly so.

---------------

As for Octane, it would have been one of Spock's Beard's best albums if they had swapped some of the non-suite tracks with some of the bonus disc ones.  Really, I find praise for the accompanying tracks surprising, more than half of those are are boring and uninspired.  They make listening to the whole album difficult.

Did so today. Once again, Nick's tastes appeal to my listening buds.  Oh, but first credit goes to Mason for insisting on a listen to Recreation Day.

As others have said, go for Inner Circle and In Search of Truth.  Feel free to stop dead in your Evergrey tracks after that.

Monday Morning Apocalypse killed the momentum this band had on the board.  It was like a mad exodus of people regularly talking about them when it was released.

IMO, The Inner Circle is certainly not the best place to start with Evergrey.  RD, ISOT and Solitude, Dominance and Tragedy are the best starting points.  IMO, MMA is a fantastic record, never understood the hate for it.

44. Pain of Salvation - Scarsick

I can already hear a few people tearing their hair out. Certainly the most underrated and under appreciated of all Pain of Salvation albums, Scarsick certainly sees the band departing a bit from the sound they had crafted over years prior, but they nailed the heavier and more direct approach without any issues. The album isn't perfect and has a few moments I would edit out, but at the end of the day it has more memorable songs than any other Pain of Salvation record. I kinda see this as the Train of Thought of their discography, in that it divided the fan base and that the songs come across really well in a live setting.

Favorite tracks: Disco Queen, America, Spitfall
