Why does Nickleback get so much hate?

I don't think it has anything to do with the quality of their music at all.  It's just that the more popular a group is, the more vocal their haters will be.

In some instances, yes.  Their level of popularity has nothing to do with it for me.  If they weren't popular, I'd still refer to them as "ear poison".

Well, that's absolutely fair.  But would you be extremely vocal about that hatred?  I'm just talking about how Nickelback is the band it's popular to hate right now, and the reason they're popular to hate is because they're popular.  People would still hate them if they weren't so big, but you wouldn't see that hatred mentioned in comments on random, unrelated Youtube videos. 

More popular = more visible.  More visible = more likely to bring teh suck.  I see your point.  There are PLENTY of local bands that suck major ass, but I don't rail on about them because I haven't heard them and don't know about them yet.  If they became popular and brought their suck to the masses, it'd be a lot easier to criticize them for it.  Like Halestorm.  I used to do festival gigs with them when they were teenagers.  Didn't care for them then and still don't.

Nickelback sucks.

Back a few years ago I got the Halestorm record because the lead singer was HAWT, and someone told me it was metal.  Her looks could not save the record.

As for my personal opinion on Nickelback, I have no problem with them.  I never took the time to buy any of their albums, so most of their stuff I haven't actually heard.  And I haven't been paying attention to mainstream music lately, so I don't know any of their most recent singles, either.  But songs like Someday, How You Remind Me, Figured You Out, and Savin' Me are pretty good songs.  And then songs like Animals and Rockstar - which certainly don't have much in the way of depth - are still pretty good for what they are: straight-forward fun songs.

Although, as an interesting side note, my two favorite Chad Kroeger songs are both from outside of Nickelback: Hero, with Josey Scott, from the Spiderman soundtrack, and Why Don't You & I, which is a Santana song featuring Kroeger.

I absolutely despise Photograph and Rockstar. Someday and How You Remind Me (the two that are identical anyway) are two more I just can't listen to anymore.

I dislike Nickelback because they're boring, perfectly generic and mediocre, and the Someday/This is How You Remind Me indenticalities irk me.  The only song I really hate is the one with the line "you look so much cuter with something in your mouth."  That song was plain horrible.  And yes, there's a bit of snob rage at how a band that can be so mediocre can sell so many records, especially a band with, as some have noticed, very few diehard fans.  Even mainstream pop acts like Lady Gaga have actual really devoted fans.

I like How You Remind Me. Other than that, their music's bad etc etc. I find it interesting though that Chad Kroeger does have a pretty good sense of how to write a pop lick. There are occasionally catchy and pleasant-sounding elements to their songs, even when they're all kinds of bad.

Also, Chad Kroeger is the Paddle Pop Lion.

Silver Side Up is a good album. Haven't listened to anything else, don't really have any urge to.

You know, considering how most of the criticism seems to be based on the 2 or 3 songs that get played on the radio all the time, it wouldn't surprise me if this were the case.

I think basically just because it became a trend. They aren't great, plenty of their stuff is downright bad, but so is a whole lot of music out there, and to be honest most of it is probably worse than Nickelback. It probably started because they were one of the first rock bands to become mega when the internet was going strong, for the reasons usually stated (they're poppy and simplistic, etc.). Had the internet existed like it does today back in the 70s or 80s new popular bands would probably have developed similar hatedoms.

Nah, Seether's not nearly as bad as Nickelback. Not yet, anyway. Another band that started out somewhat promising but has been headed further and further into Nickelback territory, though, is Shinedown.
