An effort to understand
« on: January 13, 2012, 11:25:50 AM »
Why my post count is always taken back down below 4000 even though a shit load of newbies have already went over!
I never asked about this before and it never even caught my attention but I'm really curious.

Probably because you tend to post in waves, so when we delete old threads, you have large blocks of old posts that get deleted, whereas a newbie who has posted a lot has most of all of his posts in more recent threads that avoid deletion by virtue of their newness.

Because the newbs probably post a lot more and get their postcounts up much quicker before posts/threads get culled. They're likely losing a lot more posts than you each cull, but they're posting a lot more frequently to maintain it.

Yet somehow my postcount remained high in my long absence, and I guarantee a lot of my posts were in the first threads to get deleted. :lol

I would guess because of the crash.  Those threads will never get pruned and cause a reduction.

Good point... posts from what, 07, to April '09 are in the counts, but somewhere lost in the interwebz.  I think the crash was April '09... just before BCSL.

I would guess because of the crash.  Those threads will never get pruned and cause a reduction.

This is why some people will always have astronomical post counts.  The only threads that seem to get deleted semi-regularly are the chat threads and the other "legitimate" spam threads like "what are you listening to" threads, where no real discussion takes place, and some people have posted as often as every 10 minutes or so.

I think everything not archived gets pruned.  Look at the end of each forum.  I'm not sure if those all cause post reduction, but anything not getting posts goes away.

But they don't prune very often, unless they have changed policies only locked threads tend to go the wayside on a regular basis.

I got like 3 different answers out of all the replies and they all make sense. I know it's insignificant but still a bit of a bummer, I could swear I've seen my post count turn 4000 at least 3 times and every time I'd go "hmmm, a milestone. But it feels like this happened before.. probably deja vu" :lol

Which is kinda unfair to the people who actually care about the post count thing. Thanks for the gesture Nick but you can change it back now, I really just wanted to understand how it happens. I kinda thought it was a glitch related to me and the number 4,000 and that's why I was extra puzzled :lol

What's the point of having a post count if that number is directly affected by old posts that eventually get deleted?  The number should be cumulative or be taken out altogether.  Otherwise, it serves no useful purpose.

It still gives a general idea...

Yes and no.  It seems that people who were part of the forum pre-crash are locked in at that number as a baseline.  If say Nick and I both decided to leave DTF for two years then come back, he'd still be over 10000 posts and I'd be in the hundreds, despite the fact that on average we probably have the same number of posts/day over the last year.

As for Dublagent66's idea, I don't think the software supports that because I doubt the mod staff is looking to scale back everyone's post counts.  I'm guessing the software counts your current posts plus a predetermined number (what you had at the forum crash of 2009).

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen anything to contradict that model.

Pretty much. I've looked into how the count can be made independent but havent come up with anything.

Ever since the split, I've been handwriting all of my posts on index cards as proof of their existence and count 'em up a few times a year and then PM bosk so he can adjust my postcount for the sake of accuracy. All I had to do was scan 'em into my computer and then archive 'em as .jpg's and then email 'em to bosk as a quasi "proof of purchase." He not only didn't mind this but actually commended me on my diligence.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1130 ?

Somthing like that could be nice but that mod hasnt been updated in 3 years when 2.0 was still in beta, so i doubt it would be stable.

For the most part, I do ignore them.  But, the purpose of this thread is to understand why the number exists when it isn't accurate and serves no useful purpose.
