I only own Blue from Novembre, but it's an excellent record.  I should look into this one too.
Blue is a pretty cool album, but if you ask me it suffers for being Novembre's most "Standard Novembre" album. Materia on the other hand, is a beautiful treat.

I know what Alex's #1 is. But I can't tell you, he made me promise.

teehee
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I should know, and I'm pretty sure I do. I'll wait to find out though.
You god damn better.

I don't think Chef was implying that. I think he was just commenting on how his and your music tastes rarely coincide.

14. Lateralus by Tool

Oh look, it's my namesake. And look again, it's a masterpiece of an album. I really hate to sound like this one hippy I met in Seattle, but this isn't just an album actually. It's a mother fucking experience. When a band writes an hour and eighteen minutes of music that centers around the idea of a numerical spiral (Fibonacci Sequence) and it's relation to opening ones mind to the universe, you know that you are in for one fuckin' hell of a journey. And I feel that's what this album takes you on. A journey. And much like all of Tool's albums, you can expect a very dark sounding experience with many heavy, distorted riffs, interesting progressive elements and that wonderful vocal talent of Maynard James Keenan. I'd also say that a decent understanding of what the band has put into this album (and the rest of their music) definitely helps enhance the experience. Especially lyrical. Tool are one of the few bands out there that have always had consistently amazing lyrical content to craft an even better image in your head outside of just what the music is doing. God damn, what an album.

Highlight Tracks - The Patient, Parabol/Parabola, Lateralus

13. Somewhere in Time by Iron Maiden

It's time once again to up the mother fuckin' irons in this top 50. Back when I was raised on this legendary band, this (and Seventh Son) was the album that my dad played tracks off the most when we did anything. So I have some very fond memories with this album. It easily has all of my favourite elements from Iron Maiden mixed into a single album. Epic vocal performances from Bruce, some of the best guitar tone on any album ever, and a very cool spacey/futuristic feel that has really stuck with me over the years. I don't use the word epic very often, because of how overused and obnoxious it's become, but this album can not simply be described any other way. It is, in the truest sense of the word, epic.

Highlight Tracks - Caught Somewhere in Time, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Stranger in a Strange Land

12. This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore

Okay, I know I just said I don't use the word epic but I have to one more time (maybe a few more times as we get to the best part of my list). This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore is fucking epic as all fucks. A timeless classic for all fans of thrash metal with a progressive twist. An astounding achievement for a band who sadly, is no longer who they used to be. But this album will always live on. With it's ultra fast, face smashing riffs, almost painfully quick guitar sweeps, it's death metal influenced drum work and vocal performances that shall moisten your panties all night long, you might not know what to do with yourself as the last 30 seconds of the title track appear and bring the album to a close. This album is super consistent, without a single weak moment if you ask me. Lyrically, it's a genius album as well. Many social commentaries being made all while discussing the downfall of mankind through many current topics we are all very familiar with by now (American media, scientific advancement and religious conflict to name a few). This Godless Endeavor is Nevermore's most thought provoking album to date, and remains to have kept that band to be a "thinking Man's metal".

Also the title track is the greatest metal song ever written, hands down. Shut the fuck up with whatever argument you are about to make because you are wrong.

Highlight Tracks - This Godless Endeavor, This Godless Endeavor, This Godless Endeavor

I'm not sure Burning Earth should even be on a list of best Firewind albums, but it's nice to see A Farewell to Kings, the oft overlooked Killers, and Somewhere in Time on here.

3 perfect albums right there.  Loved your write ups on them, and good to see more love for Long Distance Runner, one of Maiden's most underrated songs.

INORITE?! Bruce's performance on Long Distance Runner is easily my favourite on the entire album, and maybe from all of their 80s output. Love that song to death.

Yeah.  The guitar harmonies could also be my all time favs from Maiden also.

Pretty much this.  Deja Vu is very underrated too.

This Godless Endeavor is a monster album. I feel like the "best tracks" list should be expanded to include Born, Sentient 6 and A Future Uncertain though.

Somewhere in Time is such a cool album; it is epic!!  I found Nevermore to continuesly improve album after album- I think they may have topped out with TGE.  Their latest was abit of a letdown for me.  Some solid picks on your list.

Lateralus is a great album and I know most fans like it most of the Tool releases. For me even as a prog fan, it tends to wander a little too much. That's not to say that I don't really enjoy it but I think I like a couple of their other albums a bit more. Still, a nice pick :)

11. A Matter of Life and Death by Iron Maiden

Haters gonna hate, this is my favourite Maiden album. I'm starting to believe that the longer it takes for me to appreciate an album, the much more love I am going to want to spill all over it. When this first album first dropped (and I got my copy in the mail a week early ) I didn't really know what to think of it. At the time I wasn't too aware of the reunion era for Maiden, and was kind of expecting an album that spewed out a lot more energy (Powerslave was my most listened to album that year). It wasn't until exactly a year later that it really clicked, and oh boy did it click. I really began to fall in love with how dark this Maiden album is; AMOLAD is probably their darkest album to date. And it works surprisingly well. The lyrical themes really hit me, seeing how serious they tend to get. This album seems to have a love it or hate it relationship from what I've seen. I'm definitely in the former category.

Highlight Tracks - These Colours Don't Run, The Longest Day, For the Greater Good of God

10. Orchid by Opeth

Come at me, bro. Come right the fuck at me. I love this album. And I have been getting shit for loving Opeth's first two records for years now. But man, what these albums do compared to the rest of their stuff is just magical. Don't get me wrong, I obviously am in love with just about every album Opeth has released. Orchid just has something I prefer much more. It sounds like progressive black metal, but with better production (trust me, this album's production is GOLDEN compared to a lot of black metal). The musical ADD is another thing I very much like about this album. Some get annoyed and even a little sick of the constant change ups and lack of sticking to one musical idea. But maybe this just comes from my love for bizarre, whacked out music. There is also a lot of atmosphere to this record. Some of the best this band has ever produced.

Highlight Tracks - In Mist She Was Standing, The Twilight is My Robe, Forest of October

9. Deconstruction by Devin Townsend

Justin is probably going to murder me in my sleep for not putting this as number 1 on my list. And I'd love to, if there weren't 8 more albums that I love just a bit more than Deconstruction. But that's not to say this album isn't an absolute masterpiece and a perfect 10 on all levels. As many know, this is Devin Townsend's most whacked out, crazy roller coaster ride of an album since Strapping Young Lad was dismantled back several years ago. This album definitely makes up for lost time though. It's heavy, it's quiet, it's insane, it's silly and it's very meaningful. The album is quite literally a roller coaster ride through hell as the main character begins his journey to deconstruct himself and his life to essentially better himself as a human being. This album is fuckin' BIG. And quite honestly, the first 20 or so times I listened to it, I felt like I needed a breather after what I had just endured. There is nothing out there like this album, and I don't think there ever will be either.

Highlight Tracks - The whole god damn thing

Excellent choices. Deconstruction is of course way too low, but I'll forgive you so long as the rest of the albums are at least close to as awesome as it is.
