Good Cold War/Vietnam War Movies?
« on: December 01, 2011, 12:26:44 AM »
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out here. I'm wondering what are some good cold war movies to watch as well as good vietnam war movies to watch. I'm pretty interested in this time period and I'd love to see how hollywood portrayed it. If anyone has some suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again  :tup

Red Dawn was a pretty fucking hot war.   :lol

Anyhoo,  Dr. Strangelove and Failsafe are the two best direct depictions of the cold war, IMO,  and both awesome films.

Worth noting is that half the movies made in the sixties and seventies were allegorical of Vietnam or the Cold War.  Hollywood had tons to say about Vietnam, they just weren't allowed to say it openly.

Oh yeah.  If you can find it,  check out Countdown to Looking Glass.  The whole thing was shot as a series of news alerts and bulletins covering the onset of WWIII.  When it was originally broadcast on TV,  I tuned into the middle of it,  and had one of those War of the Worlds freak outs.  They only ran disclaimers every half hour or so.   :lol

Vietnam: Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Deer Hunter and Hamburger Hill (though this is probably the worst one of the bunch)

I knew EB would recommend Fail Safe, so I’ll just second it.

Noteworthy about that film is that in an article I read today about relations with Iran, someone commented how the US had open communications with the USSR all throughout the Cold War, even while contemplating blowing each up other up; while we have basically had no communication with Iran since 1979.

The Day After is a TV film, and has the looks and feel of one, but is a pretty intense vision of what could happen if a big one was dropped in our back yard.

There are plenty of movies about Vietnam, and even more that use Vietnam as a backdrop, even if they are not necessarily about the war, like Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter. I would be hard-pressed to think of my top pick(s).

Coming Home
Jacob's Ladder

That was a fucked up movie.

Cold war option ... War Games with Matthew Broderick and Aly Sheedy.  Not an action flick though.  More like mind games as I recall.

My boss was a Vet and says Hamburger Hill was probably the most realistic of the Nam movies made around that time (Full Metal/Platoon)
