I checked all 4 pages of Forum Suggestions but only saw this which wasn't quite what I was looking for. I think the threads would get a lot more activity if they were in GMD since so many people, myself included, forget to even check there since there's seldom anything new going on. This forum is infested with musicians so it really seems like we're not utilizing the forum to its full potential by sectioning off these types of threads in a barren wasteland considering how much traffic they'd likely see if they were in the midst of a subforum that is a close second to General Discussion in terms of overall posts.

I was thinking this just the other day, although I was actually thinking that stuff would fit better into GMD. Either way, nobody posts there because nobody looks there. Then people try to post it where people will see the thread, and it gets moved to ghost town.

We have a lot of musicians, but the subforum just doesn't get noticed. I support this.

Personally I want GMD for professional bands and artists, so I can discuss the music I like and discover exciting stuff I hadn't heard of before. I'd prefer it not to get cluttered up with loads of chatter about different guitars and people posting their own amateur recordings.

When someone releases something officially (like mrjazzguitar) they're always welcome to post it in GMD, and indeed they usually do.

Is that likely to happen tough? First of all, the frequency of postings in the Musicians forum is pretty damn low. And, if nobody's interested in it, not many people will reply in the thread and it will drop to the bottom. The popular bands' threads will still get propped up regularly due to public interest.

I don't think the amount of traffic shifted from the musician forum will really clutter anything up. There's not that much there, and I don't think it would be significantly more even if moved.
Maybe that kind of stuff could go in GD if it doesn't seem fit for GMD, and I don't think the very occasional thread about foot pedals or buying a guitar will have any negative impact on GD.

Agreed one hundred percent. If you've got something original out that you've put a lot of work into, putting it in GMD is no problem, like Mrjazzguitar did or Volk did with his album. If you just want to share your guitar solo cover of Lost Not Forgotten or your vocal covers of Winter Rose songs, that's what Musicians Forum is for.

I agree, I don't see the need for a merge whatsoever.

I would be against a merger as well.  When someone promotes their own band in GMD instead of musicians, it generally gets ignored just as much as it does in the musicians forum.  Maybe rebranding the musicians subforum as "Musicians and Emerging Bands" forum might give people who aren't musicians more incentive to go in that forum, as well as better defining the functions of each forum.

GMD gets plenty of traffic, and I'd rather not have it cluttered with what are very different subject areas in the musicians forum. I mean if it would happen it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I like that the functions are separated.

Maybe make musicians forum a subforum of the GMD? That way more people will see it but it won't take as much space up in the threads list.

Yes. Do this.

I don't see how making it a subforum will get it more traffic.  Its already right under GMD, if anything making is sub-forum might make it harder to find.  People who want to go there still will, and those who don't won't.  Am I missing something?

I agree with DTVT. By the way, I thought subforums were just the designations: Rules and Announcements, Dream Theater, Concerts and Set Lists, Bootlegs and Trading, Events, General Discussion, General Music Discussion, Musicians, Reviews, Forum Suggestions, Political and Religious, Polls/Survivors, and Archive any way. If that's the case, then by "subforum" do y'all mean making it a stickied thread in GMD or am I just missing something? Please improve my understanding of this.

Yeah subforum is the wrong word, we mean child board. A good example of this is in Archive, where there are 3 child boards for specific things.

I know that they meant child board, and that's why I said it would be harder to find.  That's why I suggested defining the board better.  Musicians, Reviews, P/R, and P/S are the only boards that don't have clarification text under them (not saying that Reviews, P/R, and P/S need them), but by stating the Musucians board is also for unsigned artists, people who may think it's just people talking about equipment might be more inclined to check it out.

I dunno about you guys, but I rarely check any sections on the index page other than GD and GMD. I think the same goes with quite a few people. I'm not interested in reviews or debates or polls, so I rarely ever look at anything below GMD.

Everytime you go into the GMD forum you'll see the latest topic being discussed in the musicians forum at the vtop of the page. I don't see how that WOULDN'T get more views, since GMD is probably one of the more frequented sections of the site to begin with (other than the DT section of course). And it doesn't clutter up anything for people who aren't interested in the musicians forum, since the threads themselves won't be mingling with the other topics in GMD. At the most, they lose some 30 pixels at the top of the page.  :P

Maybe you should offer free punch and pie at the musicians forum.
