The dislike for II makes me want to listen to it, just out of curiosity.

LTEO is my fav, great melodic rock album.

Do it and report back. Havent tried it in years (sinceit came out probably) and maybe I was expecting too much when it came out.

Their s/t is a Top 10 album of all time for me, personally.
I was going to listen to the self-titled Hardline album but I found no evidence of its existence. So I listened to Leaving The End Open instead. Not bad.

Interesting that an album can make Chad's top ten and he is unaware of its name  :lol    It's called "Double Eclipse",  David  :)

:lolpalm:

If you'll note the time of that post, it was almost midnight in the timezone I was in at the time, and I was six sheets into the wind.  I barely even recall making that post.

Chad, I actually think you meant to say 'debut.'  I can see how that would happen to be honest.

I have known Mr Big for along time but never really listened to them other than their hits. Yesterday I watched their Back To Budokan DVD and of course i've always known that Paul and Billys were masters at their instruments but never really seen them in Mr Big and all I can say is, probably one of the best sounding rock bands i've heard. Everything sounded so amazing, tight and well rehearsed from the background singing (It's For You!!) to solos and everything. Pat is such a musical and groovy drummer which I haven't really noticed before, love the sing part of his drum solo such a simple yet interesting idea. Not to forget Eric who sings his heart out all through the concert. The whole concert was a really nice surprise!  :tup

I loved Mr. Big up to their split, even the two Kotzen records weren't bad and I've seen them live three times in the 90s and they were killer. Groovy, heavy, tight, funny, you name it.

The two reunion discs are sadly not even close to their earlier records.

Do you have any recommendations for their older live dvds because I would love to hear more.

I only know Mr. Big Live from 1992 and Raw Like Sushi II, those are good enough live cds but the setlist isn't that much different. Don't know any dvds, so can't comment on that.

Never got big into them, especially their older stuff.  The last album sounded shit but the one before it was a fantastic album.  What If, I think it's called.  I have the Budokan DVD though and it is enjoyable.

Beat me to it Blob.  A bit more by the numbers, but I think will sit nicely in the album.  At least it's got some balls and energy which the genre has been lacking.  The guitar work here again is amazing.

I'm ok with the by the numbers stuff, as long as it's well written and has some balls to it. This fits the bill for me nicely. If this is indicative of the quality of the average album track, I expect it to be a solid listen.

And please not too many ballads.

I would agree.  One solid ballad per album is enough, maybe two by a stretch.  Frontiers have just been too ballad happy lately with what seems every second track is a ballad.

The regular album tracks are usually so wimpy that I consider ballads redundant. :lol And they're rarely any good.

Saw it a couple of days ago. Sounds bland and tame and overprocessed. Not interested in the album.

I'm trying to think what ones I'm looking forward to right now. Sunstorm definitely tops my list at the moment.

I remember you commented that you liked the first song released from it though.

The Sunstorm is shaping up really good indeed.

Did I like the first one? I'm glad someone's keeping track. :lol In that case, if they release another song, that can be the tie breaker.

The Sunstorm one so far is right in the pocket of what I like. Nothing new of course, but just done well with the right amount of heaviness.

I'd rate the Sunstorm low 80's - it probably does have a little more edge than earlier albums but JLT calling it "melodic metal" is a bit much  :lol     Like most of these projects the songwriting is very formula driven and so it's hard to rate it much higher.  A pleasant listen but I had no real desire to repeat............heard it all a million times before.

Just finished my first quick listen. Track 4 was what I'd call metal, and it's a bit heavier overall than I expected, but aside from that it's straight up melodic rock, not metal. Sorry, JLT! That's how I generally prefer it anyway. Doesn't seem too ballady, so that's something.
It's had a few minor curveballs (relatively speaking) that to me set it apart slightly from the average cookie cutter stuff, but overall still within that general formula I expect from Frontiers. I didn't expect otherwise.

I don't know how I'd rate it yet. As you said, it's a pleasant listen, not sure how much of it has really grabbed me for another listen though. It's not typically the type of music that grows on you with repeated listens, but I'll give it a few more spins anyway. I've liked it all so far, but there hasn't been a song that really rocked my face off yet. I'll probably agree with your rating.

I've been on a bit of a kick with this kind of stuff lately.

Khymera is the latest one I've been digging.  I bought two of their albums and they've been on pretty heavy rotation for a few weeks now.

"The Grand Design" is their most recent.  Samples here

"The Greatest Wonder" is the other one I bought - here's the title track.

The other band that's sort of in this genre that I've been getting into lately is House of Lords

I swear their vocalist is a dead ringer for Bryan Adams (who I like a lot) here's "Go To Hell" from their latest album, "Indestructible"

I tried Khymera once, and was mildly underwhelmed.  HoL is great - Indestructible is a nice album, although nothing new from them.  They're very same-y... which isn't a bad thing when the 'same' is really good music.  I find some of their early albums to have a bit of filler however.

Generally speaking, if I buy an album in this genre, I only expect to really like about 75% of the album.  They can't all be masterpieces, but sometimes there are some real gems among that 75%

HoL had much more depth/variety to their songwriting when Giuffria/Wright were involved - the current lineup is consistently strong , if a bit one dimensional.  Demon's Down is widely considered their best.  I go way back with them and was following before the debut due to the tie up with other bands like Eyes.............and of course Mr $immons.
