I agree.
This is actually getting a bit frustrating for me, since they haven't released an album since 2003, and 7 years is too long imo.
The good thing is that i got lots of other good bands etc. to listen to, so i'll survive, but then Anathema's cd must be something special.

I'm less fussed because I haven't been mad about anything since Judgement... but it's still too long. I feel sorry for Tool fans for the same reason, especially when they released 10,000 days.

Idd, Tool is another band i like very much, but i hate them for that reason.
APC and Puscifer aside, i really think Tool should focus more on Tool.
But what did you mean with the Judgement thing? :o

I don't really like A Fine Day to Exit or A Natural Disaster. Though pulled under at 2000 meters a second is amazing.

I like them both =P
They have some really amazing songs, like Underworld, A Fine Day To Exit, Temporary Peace, Looking Outside Inside, Flying, Harmonium, Balance/closer and A natural disaster. :p

How does that compete with the perfection of the previous two albums? ;)

I think Anathema has a certain "Porcupine Tree-quality".
Not as good, but what i mean by that is that there isn't really a bad Anathema song (imo), there's some songs that doesn't stand out to me a lot (mostly from Eternity), but not bad.
Also, they've changed musical-style a lot, which is also a bit Porcupine Tree-ish.
My favorite albums by them would be The Silent Enigma and Judgement (both very different from eachother), but A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster are great as well. :>

Hello from deepest darkest Devon, UK.
Right now we are meticulously placing the final sounds on our new baby. The labour has been long and intense but by next week our job is done and it is in the hands of the mid-wife (mix engineer). After which we will cut the umbilical chord [sic] then it goes into incubation for an indeterminate amount of weeks. Meanwhile we interview various foster parents to see who has the greatest capacity to give the child the best start in life. If all goes well, the little bastard will see the light of day in the spring. This will be cause for celebration. Not least for us. So with that in mind, the first thing I have planned is the event you see here, visit:

https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181509738508&ref=ts

It will tell you what you need to know. I will be playing with a few of my friends. One of which, I am proud to say, is Monsieur Les (Jacques Daniels) Smith, Anathema's very own tickler of the finest ivories and smuggler of precious metals. As I will be joined by my friend and cohort we've decided to play some of the best Anathema songs. Also we'll play new tunes and versions of some of my favourite bands. This is gonna be a memorable evening and a great way to end the year. In 2010 we get the chance to return to where you are. Maybe we can visit some of those places that have so far been impossible to reach. Time will tell. We'll do everything we can. I think TCV put it about right, deserve the future!

Posted by Danny on the Anathema forum that he posts on:

Quote
tracklist

THIN AIR
SUMMERNIGHT HORIZON
DREAMING LIGHT
EVERYTHING
ANGELS WALK AMONG US
PRESENCE
A SIMPLE MISTAKE
THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM
GET OFF, GET OUT
UNIVERSAL
HINDSIGHT

the full length of the album is about 62 minutes. its produced by vincent cavanagh and assisted by me, its recorded by les smith, mark ellis, darryl anthony, jamie and vincent cavanagh

all songs written by danny cavanagh, john douglas and vincent cavanagh

the songs have been upgraded, made better, layered with textures and harmonies, and i am sure when it is mixed and ready to go, its going to do very well. exactly how well it does remains to be seen, but it is WAY above aything we ever did before.

in fact, i think the scene is stale and needs a shake up, and we are the ones to do it.

scheduled for release in april via kscope music. a complete full european tour playing the whole album will be coming to all european territories... at some point in the future there MIGHT be a US tour with porcupine tree, and an EP independently released later in the year.

:-)

Yesterday there was a Danny/Anneke acoustic show. Here's what I missed because I hadn't received any salary the whole month.

Daniel Cavanagh: 1. Wasted Years (IRON MAIDEN)
2. Deep (ANATHEMA)
3. Lost Control (ANATHEMA)
4. One Last Goodbye (ANATHEMA)
5. Are You There? (ANATHEMA)
6. Wish You Were Here (PINK FLOYD)
7. High Hopes (PINK FLOYD)
8. Big Love (FLEETWOOD MAC)
9. Fragile Dreams (ANATHEMA)
10. Flying (ANATHEMA)

Anneke van Giersbergen:
1. Lost and Found (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
2. Day After Yesterday (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
3. Wonder (ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN & AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
4. Nu Nog (Anneke van Giersbergen)
5. Trail of Grief (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
6. My Electricity (THE GATHERING)
7. Beautiful One (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
8. Yalin (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
9. Sunny Side Up (ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN & AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
10. Hey Okay! (ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN & AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
11. Not The Most Pretty Girl (AGUA DE ANNIQUE)
12. The Power of Love (FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD)

Daniel Cavanagh and Anneke van Giersbergen:
1. Teardrop (MASSIVE ATTACK)
2. A Natural Disaster (ANATHEMA)
3. Parisienne Moonlight (ANATHEMA)
4. Songbird (FLEETWOOD MAC)
5. Temporary Peace (ANATHEMA)
6. The Blower's Daughter (DAMIEN RICE)
7. Leaves (THE GATHERING)
8. Jolene (DOLLY PARTON)
Encore:
9. You Learn About It (THE GATHERING)
10. Stairway To Heaven (LED ZEPPELIN)
11. Longest Day (ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN & AGUA DE ANNIQUE)

How about that, eh? I want to kill myself. But I won't, because Danny has said that they are thinking about coming again and recording a DVD. Hope he wasn't fucking with us.

A silver lining in the black cloud - someone made a recording of it. 128kbps but for an acoustic show it still sounds OK.

Nah, I doubt it is. It's 2 60 and 100MB wma files with a shitty bitrate. If you're interested I can rapidshare (or some other site of your choice) it. I think sharing a link to that bootleg would be OK here?

whoops  I always forget they did stuff before alternative 4.

I'm not very keen on doom metal, so discounting those 3 albums.

Eternity is very simular to the more modern Anathema-sound, and i'd say it's closer to the albums after it, then the albums before it.
The Silent Enigma is a true masterpiece, but i don't get Serenades.
I just don't think much about it, i think the fact that Vincent doesn't sing on it ruins the "anathema-feeling".
However, Sleepless is one of their best songs ever made, period.

I never understand why they didn't stick to the kind of music they were making in the Eternity era. Judgement was probably too far for me, although I recently bought "A Natural Disaster" which doesn't seem too bad. The Silent Enigma is impressive I agree.

Anathema is one of my favourite bands, so I thought I'd make a topic. They aren't really well know in the US, which is a shame. They have a few really solid albums, but unfortunately their last album was a few years ago (not including Hindsight, which is acoustic renditions of old songs).

Last.fm tags them as atmospheric rock with a few progressive influences. Their style has changed alot, the first few albums were death/doom metal but their last few albums are atmospheric/progressive. I recommend all of you to listen to Judgement and Alternative 4, two of my favourite albums. But I like everything they made after (and including) Eternity.
Progressive rock but no way would I call the last 4 original albums prog. metal. I bought Hindsight and am still working out if Angelica sounds good with doing it acoustically.

I think all Anathema-albums are great, apart from Serenades.
Even though i love Judgement, adore A Natural Disaster, worship A Fine Day To Exit and like Alternative 4, i still don't think The Silent Enigma can be topped.
To me, that is one of "those" albums, an album so perfect that you don't want to change it for a bit.
It has Great songs, great variety, and i really love the "raw"-sound.
I think what makes the album so perfect, is the fact that it was kinda before the "big" breakthrough.
There's several bands that i feel, has made their best albums before the commercial-success.
Eternity is another masterpiece that deserves to be mentioned, but it often gets forgotten.
What i mean by all of this is not that i like older-Anathema over newer-Anathema, but i think the magic, the whole time/place/stars location in the universe etc. has made The Silent Enigma nr1.

I'm a bit sleepy now, but hopefully the text above is understandable. :P
And, i'd just like to add a tiny list of my album-ranking as it is now:

1. The Silent Enigma
--
2. Judgement
3. Eternity
4. A Fine Day To Exit
5. A Natural Disaster (haven't listened to this one in a while, gotta play it soon again)
6. Alternative 4
--
7. Serenades

Im having a really hard time ranking Alternative 4, A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster.
To me, they're all pretty much equally great, so the ranking would be more 'proper' if i would put them all on 3d place together with Eternity.

The weird thing is they went from writing epic songs about mystical visions and dreams to "love songs". There's still the odd instrumental and rock song but the emphasis is on the "softer" stuff.
