What are people's thoughts on Evisceration Plague from Cannibal Corpse? I think it's amazing! One of their best IMO

EP is a great album. Just a notch above Kill, which was also fantastic.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Yeah man I love Kill as well. Eric Rutan did an amazing job as producer. I would love to see CC work with him once again on their next album. Those guitar tones on Kill and Evisceration Plague are brutal!

So I got Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel today. If these guys haven't already climbed up the ranks as my personal favourite death metal band, then they are there now.

God damn I love Morbid Angel  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Altars is the best them as far as early death metal goes, or at least it would be if Leprosy didn't exist.

As far as early death metal goes, it's up there. But as far as Morbid Angel goes, Blessed are the Sick and Gateways to Annihilation are at the top.

I can kind of get behind this. I know it's because of your love for slower, sludgy death metal, but I'd take Blessed Are the Sick over Gateways if only for David Vincent.

But, Domination ftw.  :metal

If David Vincent would have been behind Gateways, it could have potentially been their best album.

Also, Domination is very fuckin :metal :metal :metal :metal. If not just for Where the Slime Live.

While we're on the subject of Morbid Angel. They are on a new label and hopefully releasing a new album with Vincent in 2010.

In case they haven't been mentioned, The Faceless is a amazing band. For fans of technical death metal in vein of Necrophagist, I suggest you check them out. Their new album Planetary Duality is just awesome.

They dont do many breakdown-like moments, but this is definately one of the best breakdowns I've ever heard :metal I love when the guitar comes in.

On the subject of TDM, Obscura is an awesome band :metal Cosmogenesis is my fave album from them, and I relly like the artwork for it too.

Best death metal bands:

Dark Tranquillity
In Flames
Gojira
SYL
At The Gates
Morbid Angel
Death

and a few others that have temporarily escaped my memory (excluding Opeth, Meshuggah, etc because they're more than death metal)

I'm more of a doom man though myself
Drowned in Sound
Echoes & Dust
Stereoboard

Those are about it.
I have bolded the bands that are NOT death metal.

Eluveitie - Folk metal. They might have a melodic death metal sounding vocalist, but they aren't what I'd categorize as death metal.
Ensiferum - This is arguable. One one hand, they are a melodic death metal band, on the other hand, they are more folk than anything else.
Lamb of God - How in the FUCK can you say that LoG is death metal? They are modern day thrash.
Strapping Young Lad - Extreme Metal =/= Death metal. They have a lot of death metal qualities to their music, but they aren't death metal.

Also, one I'm not sure about is Light this City. I don't know what they sound like, but a quick google search says metalcore. So I don't know.

Best death metal bands:

Dark Tranquillity
In Flames
Gojira
Morbid Angel
Death

You have made some rather wise choices, my friend.

Eluveitie and Ensiferum are both Melodic Death Metal meets Folk Metal. I guess you're right about Lamb of God, but Strapping young Lad sounds like you're just being picky lol.

Eh, you can argue Eluveitie and Ensiferum as melodic death, which I have no issue with. But Strapping Young Lad has never struck me as death metal.

If you play death metal with folk instruments, it's folk metal. I've never met anyone who says Ensiferum or Eluveitie are death metal. Lamb of God, I consider groove metal, and I don't listen to much Strapping Young Lad.

Everyone can learn from this chart.

I was thinking the same thing, but black metal always sounds much more evil than death metal.

Or they just sound more lulzy. Either way, really.
