Death Metal
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:44:43 AM »
I know we have a few (at least one other) death heads here.

I'm a huge death metal fan. Favorites include:
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Morbid Angel
Deicide
Bloodbath
Opeth (They kind of count)
Obituary
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I really don't listen to any straight death metal bands, besides some melodeath like Arch Enemy and Scar Symmetry. That really needs to change.

Any Nile fans on here?

They're pretty much the only extreme heavy metal band I listen to.
Currently listening to:

Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here *****
Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned **
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées ***1/2
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing *****
Symphony X - The Odyssey ****1/2

Wtf is a death metal bamd? Also, you must not know all that much death metal if you think that Bloodbath is the only one that is possible to understand.

Anyways...death metal = awesomeness.
My favourite death metal bands:
Morbid Angel
Carcass
Cannibal Corpse
Bolt Thrower
The Berzerker
Deicide
Opeth
Children of Bodom (fuck everyone calling them power metal, I consider them melodic death)
Bloodbath

All badass bands with some badass music.

I felt its length in quite a few places.

...How can you not understand Morbid Angel? David Vincent has a pretty clear death growl.

How about Amon Amarth? Their vocalist has a pretty clear vocal style.

Death metal becomes much easier to understand after you've listened for a while. Listening while looking at the lyrics also helps. You can begin to understand what certain words sound like, a decoder if you will.

Early Katatonia

Not really. Now, I'm not an expert of death metal. But I do know death metal when I hear it. A majority of death metal derived from heavy influences of thrash metal. Incorporating fast riffs, often low tuned and distorted guitars, with some form of growling/shrieking (whether it be very guttural or high pitched). Also the use of blast beats is very common among most death metal.

Subject matter of most death metal usually deals with much darker topics, such as death, destruction, violence/war, occultism, etc..  And other often considered taboo subjects like satanism.

Things you do not see in death metal: Singers with whiney voices or who do any sort of screamo type vocals.
Lyrics that involve personal problems like losing someone you love or feeling alone.
Most attributes that makes up a metalcore/deathcore/screamo/FALSE METAL band.

A lot of what I said is summarized here:

So Opeth isn't Death Metal?
I was wondering if someone would pick up on that. My above description was mainly describing your average death metal band. What MOST death metal usually contains (Basically, sweeping generalizations).

Opeth on the other hand is part of another sub-genre of death metal called Progressive (and even melodic) death metal. A lot of the subject matter is of a different grouping compared to your average death metal band. This also goes for bands such as Children of Bodom, who too have more personal lyrics within their music.

Reminds me of incredibly misinformed assholes that I used to meet when I was a metal-head.

Them: What music you into?
Me: Mostly Death Metal
Them: OMFG you like killing people?
Me: Wut
Them: Yeh it's all those goths that kill people and have sex with dead babies and stuff
Me: ...wut
Them: You're such a weirdo. How can you listen to that stuff?
Me: Boo!

I haven't enjoyed the genre in many years.  However, Spiritual Healing should be required listening, IMO.

Carcass is recommended.  Nectrocism is an excellent album.

Apart from that, not much else, although I'd like to get into Septic FLesh.

I don't really consider Opeth death metal.  They're more prog metal imo.

Usually if someone asks me to describe Opeth I saw they're a combination of Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, and Folk with some ambiance thrown in.  This usually leaves whoever I tell this to even more puzzled about Opeth.  :-\

Dying Fetus are possibly my all time favorite DM band. Their mixture of brutality, dual vox attack and groovy passages on their early stuff is priceless. Recently they cut out the groove aspect of their music, but they still kick major ass.  :metal

I'm also really fond of:

Impaled (I recommend this for all you Carcass fans out there)
Autopsy
Cephalic Carnage
Nile
Lykathea Aflame
Spawn Of Possession
Death
Misery Index
Devourment
Disavowed

All in all, Death Metal just plain rocks.  :metal
