I've had this argument with lots of people.  Let's see what DTF thinks.

I still haven't seen the newest one, but of the first three, The Last Crusade is the best, with Raiders in second.  The Temple of Doom is way behind them.

FYI - don't bother.  Could be the biggest cinematic let-down in history.

I've only seen the first three, once. I vote for the first one. Second one was kind of painful from what I remember, and third one was good, but I recall the first being better.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I went with "Raiders" based on the fact of it being first. Temple of Doom a very close second but with that one you kind of knew what to expect. In Raiders the feel and idea were fresh and it was such an exciting movie. Not that the others weren't. It's a great franchise, but I have to admit I have yet to watch the last one..and from what I hear I haven't missed anything. I really enjoyed the story in Raiders, the suspense was great and I like the way the humor was sprinkled in throughout the movie. It wasn't over powering and nothing felt forced.
In the subsequent movies, based on the expectations, there were instances of things being forced into them. An example would be the bug scene when they are in that secret passage in Temple of Doom. Sure it fit, seems logical that there would and could be a lot of bugs, and it served its purpose but it was just copying the massive snake scene from Raiders.

Objectively, I'd say Raiders. But... I do recall when I was a kid, and I went to see the Naked Gun (and the teaser for Last Crusade came on). The theater went nuts when that Raiders Theme first hit. Crusade was a very, very good movie for the third movie in a series. I also remember seeing (and liking) Temple at the time. For a 10 year old like me, scenes like the dinner in the palace were glorious.

I didn't think Skulls, was that bad, at least the first 2/3 was fun and entertaining, but boy did it fall apart after that.

Good anaylsis

If you want another good read, go to Roger Ebert's page and read his Raiders critique/analysis in his 'Great Movies' section.

This isn't really an argument.

EDIT: Raiders, obviously.

Last Crusade, no question. Say what you will about the other films, but there's one thing they DON'T have:

Just to clarify...I like Temple and Crusade A LOT. Both really good movies that do not disappoint. I think the franchise is awesome. Like I stated, I've yet to see the last installment and honestly am a bit scared too being that so many people knock it. I don't want to tarnish how I feel about the series. I picked Raiders merely because it kicked it all off....kind of how I&W will never be surplanted as my all time favorite DT album. They may produce a better song or album here or there...but I&W will always be #1 just because it was first...and awesome.

Last Crusade for sure, but they're all great fun.  Crystal Skull is the weakest by far sure, but it's still entertaining, haters gonna hate, etc.  Not sure why everyone hates on Temple of Doom so much either for that matter.  Rankings you say?  Ok:

Last Crusade
Raiders
Temple of Doom

Temple of the Forbidden Eye (the Disneyland ride)

Crystal Skull

But they're all great, it's freaking Indy for goodness sake!  Take off your monocles, let your hair down and have a little fun with it!

The Last Crusade! Amazing film.  I remember before we went to see Crystal Skull, I said to Alice,"If this has dinosaurs or aliens in it they've blown it!" Well.....still an alright movie until the aliens bit.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. It nailed everything that makes the Indiana Jones movies so good. The others tried, but could never perfect it again. The Last Crusade is close, but it tries a little too hard and goes overboard with the comic relief at times.

Hell yeah, my order too! Just the ride may be placed down on occasion when it breaks down.  ;)

I love TLC. I do not like the ending of ROTLA, which I know the movies have hokey stuff, but it felt like TLC had the least amount out of all 4.

I don't get people who say Crystal Skull is way worse than the others.  Temple of Doom is just as bad.

I gotta go with the original Raiders.  Last Crusade is fun, Sean Connery is awesome, but in a way, that's part of the problem.  Connery can't switch off the awesome, so it became Indiana Jones and His Dad's Crusade

Also, I don't share the hate many seem to have for Crystal Skull.  Like the others, it's a fast-moving romp, no less unbelieveable than any of the others, and it tied up the series properly.

I really don't think Temple of Doom is THAT bad. Crystal Skulls deserves all the hate it gets, though.

I did.

As for the Crystal Skull, the first time i saw it, i thought the same - it's a fun film and was decent.  Then i watched it again, and it was worse.  Then i watched it again, and i couldn't sit through it.

A real Indiana Jones movie gets better the more times you see it.  Not worse.

Reasons Temple of Doom is just as bad as Crystal Skull:

1. Inconsistent tone
2. Kate Capshaw
3. Casual sexism
4. Casual racism
5. Kate Capshaw

For most in their mid-20's, Temple of Doom was the first exposure to the franchise, so we may give it a bit of a break based on nostalgic affection.

I don't remember which one I saw first, but the most memorable scenes for me from Temple of Doom were the dinner scene, the bridge with the crocodiles below, and the heart ripping out scene. I watched TOD like two years ago, and it was awful. No break from me.

I'm gonna go with The Last Crusade, but Raiders is a nose hair behind.
