Cannibal Corpse
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:52:44 PM »
ITT: We discuss one of the greatest extreme metal bands ever.

I love Cannibal Corpse. A lot. I love the album covers, I love the music, and I especially love the lyrics. Alex Webster is a fucking monster of a bass player. Also, unlike many death metal bands, CC never feels "samey" to me. They stick to a formula but they do it so well that it never gets boring.

It's also fun when people get offended over the album covers and lyrics. Ironically, the only people that take the band's image seriously are the detractors. Which is hilarious.

I know there are some death metal fans on DTF. There aren't many of us, but those of us who like CC have a place to discuss them here.

So, to kick things off, I've added a poll. Which era do you prefer? Barnes or Corpsegrinder? Personally, I prefer the Corpsegrinder era. Even though the Barnes era is arguably more "brutal" with the album covers and lyrics, I think the actual music of the Corpsegrinder era is much better. I also prefer George as a vocalist. What about you guys?

PS - If you ever get bored and you have 3 hours to kill, watch the Centuries of Torment documentary on Youtube. One of the most thorough and enjoyable band documentaries I've ever seen. Highly recommended.

I prefer the Barnes era, mainly because that's the era I got into them with. The first four albums are death metal classics. I'd agree that as of right now, George is the better vocalist, but nobody can touch Chris' guttural sound on Tomb of the Mutilated.

I found the Barnes stuff much more consistent too. Most of the albums since then have had a few weaker tracks.

Ninja Edit: for those who just have The Bleeding, get Tomb of the Mutilated. NOW.

Oh yeah, I'm not shitting on the Barnes era at all. I like those albums. There's no doubt in my mind though, that Tomb > Butchered.

I can agree with that ranking. :tup

Edit: Actually, after thinking about it, this is how I would rank them.

1. Bleeding
2. Tomb
3. Eaten
4. Butchered

But like you said, they're so consistent that any ranking might as well be correct.

Just wanted to say I hate their album covers (the early ones). I know it's not serious, but it feels to me like trying to provoke just for the sake of provoking and because of not having a better idea. There are lots of covers in extreme metal which are simultaneously very dark and discomforting but still thoughtful and having some sort of actual concept (e.g. I find Slayer covers really good in this department). CC covers seem to me like "WE SO BROOTUHL AND GORE AND PROVOKE".

It kinda puts me off from the actual music. You can play extreme and brutal music while at the same time not being primitive. I don't expect light-hearted and happy themes from death metal, but demonstrating simply lots of gore doesn't appeal to me even slightly.

Corpse. I have Tomb and Kill. Although I have heard Barnes pronounces things clearly near the end, it is the near impossibility to understand things puts me off.

It's a bit better on The Bleeding, but Chris was always tough to understand. George enunciates a lot more, but it's still tough.

If you want to build up your death metal lyric decoder, listen to early Death.

Unless you are listening to the Bleeding or reading the lyrics as you go along, understanding Chris Barnes's lyrics through his manly gutteral noises is borderline impossible.

Hm, not sure about that. I'm sure the music will speak for itself, like Kill, but I always love seeing what they come up with as far as song titles and stuff.

I really hope the artwork is better this time. What the fuck happened after Wretched Spawn? We got a big word and a picture of some zombies. Sorry, but you just can't follow an alien bursting out of a naked lady from 3 separate orifices while zombie doctors watch with something like that.

I was very satisfied with the single. The guitar sound on Evisceration Plague was my only major gripe with it, and the tone on the new song is just sexy.

This song is very solid. George's voice doesn't seem as deep as usual, but he still sounds good.

I agree about the guitar tone, big step up from EP. I assume Rutan is behind the chair again for this album?

I'm excited to see how this compares to Evisceration, which is good but nowhere near Kill status. The album cover is pretty cool, but I can't help but feel it's too...cartoony for them. I mean, they have some pretty cartoony album covers, but this is still missing that one two STAB YOU IN THE FUCKING JUGULAR that the vast majority of their album covers have.

Oh hai samples. Literally every song made me moist in the crotch, especially Encased in Concrete. This has serious potential to be their best album since Tomb of the Mutilated.

damnnnn CC, BTBAM, Periphery, Veil of Maya. I'd love to go to the Philly show.

I know CC is death metal and everything but I listened to those two songs from the new album and I just couldn't stop smiling(in a good way). That bass player is INSANE. Gonna have to check out the new album. All I have is the WRETCHED SPAWN and I remember the DVD that came with it was very entertaining.
